M
AXINE HARPER of Greenwood (‘74)
has been named the recipient of the
2009 Alumnus of the Year Award.
She will be recognized on August 22nd in a special ceremony. (See page 2.)
When a senior at Pillow, Maxine was selected for
the Pillow Academy Hall of Fame. The entry in
the 1974 Mustang Memories reads: “Once in a
great while a person comes along who influences the lives of anyone she meets. Maxine Harper
is definitely this kind of person. Besides being
a person of strong character, she has won many
academic awards. Maxine was a member of the
Latin Club, science club, and honor club. Her academic excellence was exhibited when she was
awarded valedictorian of the 1974 graduating
class. Maxine Harper is certainly most deserving
of membership into the 1974 Hall of Fame.”
After leaving Pillow, Maxine continued on her
path of success. She enrolled at Delta State University where she received a B.S.Ed. in Special
Education in 1978. From DSU, she went to Mississippi State University and earned an M. Ed. in
Special Education in 1979. Next came an Ed.D. in
Curriculum and Supervision from DSU in 1987.

in the Leflore County School for Handicapped
Children/Greenwood Public Schools from 1980
until 1987. She then worked as a computer programmer and educational specialist (1987-1997)
for Micro-Sped Computer Consultants. Next,
she became President and Director of Product
Development (1997-2000) for Software Solutuions, Inc., in Greenwood. In 2000, Dr. Harper
began working in various capacities at the University of Mississippi. She began as a Research
Analyst in the Center for Educational Research
and Evaluation, but she has served since then as
an adjunct faculty member, Associate Director of
the Center for Educational Research and Evaluation, and presently serves as a Clinical Assistant
Professor and Interim Director of the Center for
Educational Research and Evaluation.

book, Journey of Life, was released in June. In
this autobiography, Maxine “shares her struggles
and triumphs as she climbed the educational
ladder” as an individual with quadriplegic cerebral palsy. Dr. Maxine Harper’s story is a “must

the seasons of life, from early childhood to her
present career.
Louis Coleman
is Drafted by the Kansas City Royals
Coleman also received 2009 All-America recognition from Collegiate Baseball magazine and
was named to the first-team All-America squad.
He is the 18th LSU player to earn first-team AllAmerica accolades in the past 22 seasons. He
is one of six pitchers on the 17-man first-team
roster.
LSU Pitcher LOUIS COLEMAN (’05), who was
unanimously selected the 2009 SEC Pitcher of
the Year, was drafted to play for the Kansas City
Royals in the 5th round on June 11th.
In the regular season, Louis had the most victories among SEC pitchers , the second lowest
earned run average, the third most innings
pitched and the fourth highest number of
strikeouts. Reacting to the announcement, LSU
Coach Paul Mainieri said, “I can’t find any new
words to say about that young man and what
he has meant to our program and what he has
done for our team.”
According to Tim Kalich’s editorial comments
in the May 21, 2009, issue of the Greenwood
Commonwealth, “ Having postponed his dream
to pitch professionally, Coleman returned this
year for his senior season in Baton Rouge. He
is a big reason why LSU is ranked No. 2 in the
country and is considered one of the teams
with a good shot at winning the national championship.”
Louis is the son of Kathy and Hal Coleman (‘77)
of Schlater. He has three sisters. Meredith (‘02)

Message from the Alumni President
Dear Fellow Alumni,
In my role as President of the Pillow

alumni who were not parents of current
students made gifts to PA+. We are being
challenged to raise that level significantly.
Just imagine the impact that we could
have on our school if we all gave a little
something. Let’s see which class can have
the greatest percent of participation. I
am betting on the class of 1997!
Please look for more information in the
fall regarding the PA+ Annual Fund. I
thank you in advance for your support.
If we, your Alumni Association, can be of
any assistance please let us know.
Gratefully yours,
