GRANDPARENTS INCREASE THE RISK OF OBESITY IN CHILDREN
Leaving your children with their grandparents may be bad for the little ones health according to new research in
the “International Journal of Obesity‟. The British study showed that children who are looked after by their
grandparents tend to be more overweight or obese. Researchers looked at over 12,000 toddlers between the ages
of nine months and three years. Kids who are looked after by their parents or who go to nurseries, had no similar
risk of weight problems, although children of richer parents were more at risk, especially if the mother had a
university education.
Almost a quarter of pre-scholars are overweight. This research could help reduce the rate of obesity in Britain. It
should also send an important message to grandparents – stop filling your grandchildren with snacks and sugary
treats. We all know grandparents like to give children all they want. It is the same all over the world. There are
several possible reasons why young children are more at risk of obesity with their grandparents. One is that older
people might be less aware of proper nutrition and so give their grandchildren unhealthy food. Another possible
cause is that older people are less active and might not play with the children.

CHOCOLATE IS GOOD FOR YOUR HEART
A study carried out in Germany over eight years has found that chocolate may be good for your heart. They
compared how much chocolate was in the diet of almost 20,000 people to the number of heart attacks and strokes
people had.
Lead researcher Brian Buijsse said: "Chocolate is not as bad as we used to think, and may even lower the risk of
heart disease and stroke." Mr Buijsse‟s team found that dark chocolate was the healthiest kind to eat; milk
chocolate has fewer effects and white chocolate no effects.
The German study showed that people who ate the most chocolate reduced their risk of having a heart attack by
27 per cent. The risk of suffering a stroke was cut by 48 per cent. Nutrition experts believe that natural
compounds in chocolate called flavonols are good for our heart. Flavonols also help reduce blood pressure. They
are found in cocoa beans, and this is why dark chocolate, which has more cocoa, contains more of them than milk
chocolate, which has more fat. Buijsse warns people not to suddenly eat lots of chocolate: "Eating higher amounts
will most likely result in weight gain. If people start eating small amounts of chocolate, it should replace other
high-calorie sweets or snacks.”

“SLUMDOG” CHILDREN IN MILLIONAIRE WORLD
The two child stars from the hit movie “Slumdog Millionaire” have attended the Oscars ceremony in Los
Angeles. The two children, Rubina Ali and Azharuddin Ismail, actually live in the Mumbai slums where the movie
was filmed. They are already getting many enquiries from India’s film studios about acting in Bollywood movies.
The movie tells the story of how a teenager from one of the poorest parts of India becomes a millionaire.
Now, little Rubina and Azharuddin have done the same, for a weekend at least. They have swapped the poverty of
their daily lives for the riches and glamour of the movie world’s biggest night. “Slumdog Millionaire” director
Danny Boyle said he was very excited for the two young stars. He said it had been fantastic that the pair rubbed
shoulders with the stars on the famous red carpet.
Boyle has already promised to fund all of the children's education. Nine-year-old Rubina said she couldn’t
wait to arrive in L.A. She told the reporters she wasn’t scared and that she took lots
of photos to show her friends in Mumbai.

HOLLYWOOD GEARS UP FOR OSCARS
Hollywood is gearing up for the 84th annual Academy Awards. The prestigious film honors, also known as
Oscars, acknowledge the best in movie making, and golden statuettes will go to actors and actresses and others
behind the camera. The top contenders are facing off in a very competitive year.
Meryl Streep is considered one of the favourites for the Oscar for best actress for her role as former British Prime
Minister Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady. Viola Davis is another favourite for the best actress Oscar for her
role in The Help as an African-American maid in the American South in the 1960s.
The film explores themes of race and class. George Clooney is up for two Oscars, for co-writing the adapted
screenplay for the political film The Ides of March and for his starring role in The Descendants, a family drama set
in Hawaii.
There is intense competition at the Oscars, and always some surprises but George Clooney told reporters earlier
this month that he’s just honored just to be included as a nominee. “It’s nice because it comes from people that
you work with a lot from every category. It’s really nice. It’s fun”, Clooney said. Oscar winners are determined by
a vote of nearly 6,000 members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, a professional organization
of key people in the movie industry. The envelopes revealing the results will be opened Sunday at a gala
presentation in Hollywood.

Sleeping Next To Pets Can Make You Sick
New research suggests that sleeping next to your pet increases your risk of getting sick. Researchers from the
University of California-Davis believe pet owners have a greater chance of catching diseases as serious as the
bubonic plague, an infection that killed 75 million people across Europe in the fourteenth century. Professor Bruno
Chamel, however, said that although this is extremely rare, it does happen. He said people are safer if they keep
Kitty and Fido next to their bed, not on it. He wrote in the journal Emerging Infectious Diseases: "There are
private places in the household, and I think our pets should not go beyond next to the bed....Having a stuffed
animal in your bed is fine, not a real one."
This research will upset many people who love hugging their pet or getting their face licked by them. Professor
Chamel considers that because people are having fewer children, pets have become replacements. More than 60
per cent of American households have a pet and up to 62 per cent of pet owners let their animals sleep with them,
according to Chamel’s research. He has already received many e-mails strongly disagreeing with his research.
They say they have slept with their pets throughout their lives and are as healthy as anyone else. Larry Kornegay,
president of the American Veterinary Association, agreed, saying: “The benefits of having a pet, whether or not
you sleep with it, far outweigh the negatives.”

Spain Win 2010 FIFA World Cup Final
Spain’s Andres Iniesta scored in extra-time to make his country champions of the world. It was heartbreak for the
Netherlands who lost their third World Cup final. The result was perhaps a victory for football. It was a largely
bad-tempered match in which the referee awarded 14 yellow cards and one red. Spain tried to play their attractive
one-touch football throughout the game. The Dutch seemed to be doing everything they could to stop them with
non-stop fouls. They were very lucky not to have more players sent off. The Netherlands had their chances during
the game but were stopped by some exceptional goalkeeping from Spanish captain Iker Casillas. Spain kept trying
to pass the ball and push forward and their positive play finally paid off four minutes before the end.
Iniesta’s World-Cup-winning goal sparked mass celebrations among Spanish fans in Johannesburg and all over
Spain. It was Spain’s first ever victory at the World Cup and only their second ever major trophy – the first came
two years ago at the European Championships. Spain won the tournament scoring the fewest ever goals – putting
the ball into the back of the net just eight times. That didn’t matter to the crowds in the Spanish capital Madrid.
One ecstatic fan Ferran Ramirez was crying for joy after seeing his country win their late victory on one of the
city’s big screens. He told reporters: “This is the happiest night of my life. The happiest night in Spanish history.
We finally showed the world how good we are.” Teresa Lopez agreed, saying: “Spain are the ones who played
total football. We are the new Brazil.”

FACEBOOK DEPRESSION
A new study suggests that social media sites have created a new phenomenon known as "Facebook
depression". The American Academy of Pediatrics recently warned parents about the possible dangers of
networking websites on their children’s mental health. Report co-author Gwenn O’Keefe described the
way social interaction is changing: "For some teens and tweens, social media is the primary way they
interact socially, rather than at the mall or a friend's house," she said. She added: "A large part of this
generation's social and emotional development is occurring while on the Internet and on cell phones.
Parents need to understand these technologies so they can relate to their children's online world, and be
comfortably parents in that world."
The report says it is essential for parents to be aware of how social media sites can affect children and
that the Internet is not always a healthy environment for kids. The writers also urged parents to be on the
lookout for cyberbullying, sexing and online predators. They recommended parents take an active role
and discuss things like bullying, privacy and feeling down because of what’s happening on Facebook. A
recent poll stated that twenty two per cent of teenagers log on to a social media site more than 10 times a
day and more than half at least once a day. There are conflicting reports as to whether Facebook helps
youngsters, by allowing them to express themselves, or isolates them from society.
READING COMPRENHENSION
The report author said teens preferred to interact at malls, not online.
The article says the Internet is not always good for children’s health.
A survey found that most teenagers use social media sites at least once a day.
All reports agree that Facebook leads to the isolation of children.
