In order to become certified by the State you will need to perform the following:
1) A total of 155 classroom study hours.
2) One hundred and sixty (160) hours of internship (if new to the field or if you have less
than 1 year of field experience). We will provide you with a list of several AOD

necessary) your internship. Please note that you will need to register with the state
board as either a student or counselor (depending on your experience) so you can
perform your internship.
3) One (1) year (2080 hours) of on the job training experience at a state certified Alcohol
and/or Drug Treatment Center.
After meeting the requirements you can then register with the state board to take the
Counselor certification exam.
Santa Monica College is not responsible for the student/counselor registration fees and
the counselor certification testing fees. If you are interested in receiving certification through
the state you must register with the California Certification Board of Chemical Dependency
Counselors (CCBCDC) State Board as they are the board that recognizes our program. Please
visit the following website for more information: http://www.californiacertificationboard.org.
We thank you for your interest in our program and look forward to assisting you,
