Aims and objectives

The aim of this course is to present the status and role of companies in our current economic environment. By the end of the course students will comprehend what forms companies may take, what attributes they possess, how they operate, what key functional areas they work by and how their performance is evaluated. It is a basic subject, which prepares the teaching of numerous professional subjects.

Course description

During this course, students are expected to gain some insight into Business Economics and

Administration, and therein learn about the role of corporate economics and the operations of businesses.

Methodology

This subject (Business Administration) builds over lectures, case studies and the compulsory reading. During lectures the main chapters of Business Economics and Administration will be addressed.

Attendance at lectures is highly recommended.

Assignments

1. Case study assignment: during the semester one take home case will be distributed (on

27/Nov). Students are expected to use their knowledge based on the topics discussed during the course and to focus on the assigned questions in their analysis. More details will be given during classes. The papers should be submitted directly to the lecturer either electronically or in printed version. One week is available for the case study. Cases are due on 5/Dec at the beginning of the class. In case of late submission 3 points are deducted for each day of delay.

2. Mid term exam: to be written during the first exam period (27-31 October) based on the topics covered so far.

3. Oral exam : At the end of the semester, an oral exam is closing the course. The exam is based on the course topics. A minimum of 21 points is required to pass the exam.

4. Bonus assignments: these extra opportunities will be announced throughout the semester.

Maximum of 10 points can be gathered by solving these assignments.

Assessment and grading

Final grade will consider the case study assignment, the mid term exam, the oral exam, the activity during lectures and the optional bonus assignments.
