INTERNATIONAL FIELD STUDY
The Lubin Leaders and Scholars Program ran its inaugural international field study to Japan in August 2004. The course addressed
two general issues: (1) Is there a “new Japan” (and Japanese leadership paradigm) emerging? and (2) How will Japanese leadership in
the 21st century compare and interrelate with western models and approaches? LLSP students from both New York and Pleasantville
traveled to cutting-edge Tokyo, historic Kyoto, and Osaka to engage in Corporate Visits (IBM Japan, Matshushita, Kikkoman, NEC,
NTT, Panasonic, And Daikin), Meetings and Briefings (JETRO, International House Of Japan, Commerz Bank, Nippon Keidanren
Int’l Cooperation Center, Goldman Sachs, And NUCB Students), and Context and Cultural Sites (Tokyo Stock Exchange,
Takashimaya, Tsukiji Fish Market, Ginza, Yasaka Shinto Shrine, And Toji Buddhist Temple). See the website for pictures.
MENTORING AND ADVISORY INITIATIVE
We have arranged for Lubin Leaders to participate in a specially-enhanced mentoring and advisory program. Students will be
matched with an alumni mentor who will a) provide leadership insights, b) offer information on career and field trends, and c) offer a
half-day shadowing opportunity. In New York those interested should contact Maxine Sugarman at x1950 and identify themselves as
LLSP students to arrange a personal planning meeting. In Pleasantville, students should contact Carol Dockery at x3361 to arrange a
planning meeting.
PROGRAM LITERATURE
The new Lubin Leaders brochures have arrived and will be used to publicize our program as well as to recruit new students. Stop by
Dr. Kessler’s or Dr. Winsted’s office to check it out. Also note that the most recent edition of Lubin-Business carried an article on the
program and recent speakers Rosalie Tung and the Shanghai Quartet.
EVENTS
There will be several events on both campuses this semester. Recall that program participants are expected to participate in at least
two events per semester (one may be from the University Honors College):
New York:
NYC-1: The Lubin Leaders and Scholars Program is participating in a breakfast roundtable at PriceWaterhouseCoopers’ (PWC)
midtown facility on Wednesday, 22nd September from 8:30-10:30am. Students will receive a briefing from PWC Vice Chairman
John O’Connor on the firm and industry as well as participate in a roundtable discussion on Leadership and Ethics in the Accounting
Industry. Interested students should contact Dr. Kessler asap and no later than Friday 17th September. Business attire required.
NYC-2: We have secured a number of complementary seats for Lubin Leaders at the prestigious (and expensive) 11th Annual
Securities Industry Conference, Thursday 21st October at the Schimmel Center. Scheduled speakers include E. Stanley O’Neal
(Chairman and CEO Merrill Lynch), Paul Steiger (WSJ), Mayor Michael Bloomberg, and CEO’s of major firms and exchanges too
numerous to mention. Pre-registration is required so contact Professor Eric Kessler asap and no later than October 3rd.
NYC-3: We have arranged a group tour in New York City’s leadership hub, City Hall. The tour will take place on Tuesday, 26th
October from 10:00-11:00am and hopefully include a meeting with our local representative. Interested students should contact Dr.
Kessler asap and no later than Friday 22nd October.
NYC-4: Dr. Jone Pearce is coming to Pace on Monday, 22nd November. She is former president of the Academy of Management,
the preeminent professional management association in the world, and Acting Dean and Professor at the University of California
Irvine. Dr, Pearce is one of the world's experts in interpersonal and political processes and has published over 70 articles and several
books. She will speak from 6:00-7:30pm about Leadership and Influence. She will also have a private luncheon workshop in the
afternoon. Interested students should contact Professor Eric Kessler asap and no later than Friday 19th November.
Pleasantville:
PLV-1: An interactive leadership seminar will be offered by Dale Carnegie Training to 25 Lubin Leaders in early October. Dale
Carnegie Training has been providing training to business executives for nearly 100 years and has trained people in nearly all of the
Fortune 500 companies. They will be tailoring one of their training programs to the needs of Pace students and promise that the
seminar will be fun, as well as giving students new skills for succeeding in the world of business. Students will be polled in
September to see which of several topics interest them most and a date will be firmed up. Watch for the poll and more information!
PLV-2: Lubin Leaders will be visiting IBM’s research facility in Yorktown Heights in late October or early November. IBM
researchers will share with Lubin Leaders insights into innovation within IBM and the future directions of consumer technology.
Come see what the future holds – watch for more information and a date coming soon.
PLV-3: In November, Lubin Leaders will have lunch with the Deans of Lubin and the Pleasantville LLSP associate director to give
feedback about the Lubin Leaders program and other Lubin experiences and to make suggestions for LLSP events and programming,
as well as any other aspect of Lubin’s academic and extracurricular programs. We want to hear from you – don’t miss this
opportunity to let us know what you want. Date will be announced as soon as it is arranged with the Deans. Watch for the date soon.
