Understanding Genetic Disorders
The Work of Gregor Mendel
To begin, in order for you to understand and appreciate all the work Gregor Mendel did to further
our understanding of the science of genetics, you must first review Parts of a Flower and Plant
Reproduction from 7th grade Life Science. Follow the steps in order.
I. Collect the Parts of the Flower handout at the Materials Station.
II. Go to: http://www.softschools.com/science/plants/ for various games/puzzles to review parts of
a flower and plant processes.
III. In the Life Science Textbook, read pp. 584-586 on the History of Genetics and the Work of
Gregor Mendel. Study the pictures and their corresponding captions.


Begin a Genetics Vocabulary List in the Class Notes section of your binder. Remember to
underline and highlight all vocabulary words. You may number them, if you wish.
