GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The item belongs to the reading comprehension
section of the test: part 7: Reading
Comprehension. The section consists of fortyseven items.
The item taps into the ability to understand
advice from an article.
PROMPT ATTRIBUTE
The item consists of a 120 – 130 words long
excerpt from an article, the stem question
asked to clarify advice given in that
article, and four possible answer choices.
Content of the excerpt: It presents a typical
problem or task in the world of business and
proposes a solution to it. The solution to
this problem is in abandoning a commonly
practiced method that leads to the identified
problem and refocusing on specific observable
aspects of the problem or task.
The length of the four answer choices: 3 - 6
words, including prepositions and articles.
Structure of answer choices: All four
statements are presented in the Imperative
mood.
Vocabulary register is neutral.
Distracter 1: a suggestion is absolutely

Distracter 2: a suggestion is absolutely
opposite to the one made in the excerpt;
Distracter 3: the suggestion is not even
mentioned in the excerpt but remotely reminds
of an unimportant observation from the
excerpt.
The correct answer: a more compressed and
rephrased form of advice given in the
excerpt. There should be no identical clue
word in this option.
RESPONSE ATTRIBUTE
The Test taker (TT) reads the excerpt, then
the stem question and finally the four answer
choices.
While making her decision, the TT is looking
for the answer choice that expresses one of
the central suggestions given in the excerpt.
Once the option with the correct suggestion
is identified, the TT fills in the
corresponding oval on the answer sheet.

Meetings can waste a great deal of time. But
you can make your meeting run more smoothly
by following a few simple rules. First, have
an agenda. This will help keep you focused on
what is important. Next, decide who needs to
be involved. More people means less efficient
discussion. Finally, keep the discussion
moving. Thank each speaker as he or she
finishes and move on to the next speaker.
This encourages people to make their remarks
brief. And don’t forget: What happens after a
meeting is more important than what happens
during the meeting. The skills used then are
more professional and less procedural. So no
matter how well you run a meeting, it is the
work that gets done after the meeting that is
important.
172. What is one way to run a meeting?
A. Watch how your manager runs meetings.
B. Minimize the number of participants.
C. Let the group make decisions.
D. Let everyone speak.

The correct answer is B.
