Chapter 3- Culture

Create Your Own Culture

We have discussed what culture is, and why different cultures have different attitudes on various issues. Sociologists have found seven traits that appear to some degree in every culture. These traits are broken up in a chart on page 102. Using the chart from page 102, create your own culture. Be sure to explain (give details) for each trait. See the rubric for any questions.

Economy

What is the role of technology in your culture? (Do we use computers, cell phones, and other new inventions?)

What is the role of business? (What types of jobs to people have?)

What are the different modes of transportation? (How do people get around?)

How do we communicate? (How do we talk to each other? See #4 Language for ideas)

How do people in your culture get food, clothing, and shelter?

Institutions

Explain the roles of: (Are these things important? What do they do for you?) o family members o government o religion o education

3.

Fine Arts

How does your culture express/share itself? (Examples: dance, paintings, writings)

4.

Language

How does your culture communicate? (Do they speak to each other, use hand signals or pictures?)

5.

Environment

What do cities in your culture look like?

What materials are used for building?

Are resources (water, air, trees, etc.) important to your culture?

6.

Recreation

What does your culture do for fun?

What holidays are important to your culture?

7.

Beliefs

Explain some values and traditions in your culture? (Actions or items that are important to you)
