If you believe that you satisfy the exemption criteria for a Mathematics course,
pick up an “Application for Course Exemption” from the Records Office.
Students may apply for exemptions during the first week of any semester for
courses in that semester. Exemption applications are processed during the
semester that the student would normally be required to take the course.
Students must NOT assume an exemption has been granted or approved until an
official notification of exemption is received.
All students applying for an exemption in a first level math course must
accompany their exemption application with their math assessment test results.
All students in first semester math classes must write a math assessment test.
To assist in the exemption process, it is most important to fill in your application
form completely and to provide proper (official) documentation. Applications
with insufficient or incomplete documentation will not be processed or will be
denied.

For students who satisfy the exemption criteria and the courses were taken more
than 7 years prior, the PLAR (Prior Learning and Recognition) process may be
the more appropriate route to take. For information on the PLAR process, visit
the Recognition of Learning web site.
http://www.mohawkcollege.ca/dept/pla/platbhmp.html.
A PLAR test for the math course may be required after assessment of your
experience or prior learning. Assessment of your PLAR portfolio will be used to
establish that you have prior learning and experience for the course in question
and give you an opportunity to demonstrate knowledge and skills for the purpose
of awarding credit.
Students who have post-secondary university credits in Mathematics must
accompany their application form with a transcript from the university and a
course outline or syllabus of the course that they feel is equivalent.
Students who have post-secondary university credits from a university outside of
North America dated more than 7 years earlier will need to go through the PLAR
(Prior Learning and Recognition) process. For information on the PLAR process,
visit the Recognition of Learning web site.

A PLAR test for the math course may be required after assessment of your
experience or prior learning at the foreign university. The PLAR test will be
based on the coursework of the course at Mohawk. Assessment of your PLAR
portfolio will be used to establish that you have prior learning and experience for

Statistics Courses
Applications for Course Exemptions for all Statistics courses will be assessed on an
individual basis. The criteria used will be the course description and the use of
appropriate statistical software in the equivalent course. For this reason, it is important
that all applications for an exemption in a statistics course be accompanied with a
detailed Course Outline (or a syllabus) of the course that is being used as an equivalent.
