Explain the purpose of cell replication.
State the phases of the Cell Cycle and describe what is happening in each phase.
Explain the phases of Mitosis, describing clearly what is happening to the chromosomes at each phase.
Describe the structure of RNA, listing correct RNA nitrogenous bases.
State the function of mRNA, rRNA and tRNA.
Explain the role of the ribosome in protein production.
Explain the process of transcription, understanding that this is an enzyme-driven process.
Explain the process of translation, understanding that this is an enzyme-driven process.
Discuss how the amino acid sequences relates to protein function.
List examples of gene mutations and discuss the consequences of mutations.
MCAS Standards
Central Concept: Genes allow for the storage and transmission of genetic information. They are a set of instructions encoded in
the nucleotide sequence of each organism. Genes code for the specific sequences of amino acids that comprise the proteins
characteristic to that organism. Standards 3.1, 3.2 and 3.3.

Test
#1---The illustration below represents a cell that is entering mitosis.
a)
Identify one function of mitosis.
The cell shown in the illustration has recently completed the synthesis phase (S phase) of the
cell cycle and is in prophase of mitosis.
b) What happened in this cell during the S phase in preparation for division? Describe the evidence
that supports your answer.
c)
Draw the end products that will be formed when this cell completes mitosis.
#2--DNA replication and transcription are important processes in cells.
a.
b.
Identify the end products of both DNA replication and transcription. Be specific in your answer.
Explain the importance of each process in eukaryotic cells.
