Minutes
Reviewed Action Items.
 Donation to Reading Center scheduled for next Tuesday.
Rick reviewed Treasurer’s report. Primary concern is that dues are not
covering expenses; thus fund-raising activities are required to make
ends meet.
Treasurer’s
Report
Decided to not discount membership dues. But, did decide that we ought
to “lighten up” on requirements for expenses over and above dues.
 Wine fund-raiser: decided that those who elect not to sell wine
may choose to make a donation but will not be required to do so
 Foundation giving: decided to promote Foundation giving,
however, will list it as “optional” on dues form so that members
know they can elect to not pay
 Basketball tickets: decided that we should leave this as a
required expense which is also consistent with other clubs.
Bills for dues were distributed.
Past due meal bill for Peter Bjerke will be paid by club as he has been
dropped from the roster and did not pay.
Decision made to give Hilton staff $120 for Christmas.
Membership Current roster has 25 members. Jolene has removed Steve Norris and
Peter Bjerke from the roster. Joanne has removed them from the
website.

Wine FundRaiser
Discussed how well the fund-raiser is going. Rick indicated that he has
not received much money yet. Having the Party Pak on the same ticket
adds some complexity and risks that if not crossed off; someone could
pay for 1 bottle yet pick up the Party Pac. Suggest separate ticket in the
future. Other confusion around whether Party Pak counts as “1” or “4”;
most agreed that each Party Pak counts as 4 bottles sold. Rick also
indicated that he often receives “cash” and that sometimes members
combine wine revenue with dues. Will remind members to provide
check for all wine revenue and a separate check for bills to facilitate
accounting. Will also ask that in the future, that the fund-raiser chairs
handle accounting and then give the Treasurer the final revenue/report.
Decided that we may want to recognize members selling wine at the end
of the fund-raiser (last week in January).
Basketball
Tournament
Dan reported that all is going well. Still need volunteers, particularly on
12/31. Note to be sent as reminder to members.
STRIVE has requested a larger share of the proceeds. Dan indicated that
while STRIVE is highly supported by proceeds that they will not likely
get a much larger share (~$7,500). Jolene indicated that Risers did
approve $500 to STRIVE.
Mid-Term
Jolene mentioned that we are receiving information on the January midterm (1/17). Will try to get good attendance, including some of the
newly proposed board members.
District
Literacy
Proposal
This year the District Literacy Committee would like to encourage each
club to participate in a two part literacy project. Part one will hopefully
improve life for someone outside your club and the second part will
improve the lives of your club members.
Part 1 – Develop and Implement a Literacy Project. Risers will continue
to support The Reading Center.
Part 2 – Participate in our first ever “Rotary Reads”
This idea came from an initiative of the National Endowment for the
Arts called “The Big Read.” The Big Read provides citizens with the
opportunity to read and discuss a single book within their community. It
was created in response to the National Endowment for the Arts report
“Reading at Risk, A Survey of Literary Reading in America,” which
identified a critical decline in literacy reading among American adults.
For our first ever “Rotary Reads” the District has chosen, “Three Cups
of Tea” by Greg Mortenson and David O. Relin. What we need to do is
to encourage everyone in our club to read this book between now and
Jolene to
follow-up.
the last week in March. At our meeting during the last week of March
(Literacy Month) our club will hold a book discussion on “Three Cups
of Tea” which will be led by one of our own members. Joanne offered
to facilitate if no one else does.
Next
Meeting
Jolene will send date/time for next meeting sometime in January.
