Water Purification and Mixture Separation
Purpose:
-
To “purify” a water sample and calculate the percentage of pure water in a mixture.
Prelab Notes:
 The most effective “green” technologies often model systems already in place in
nature.
 The water cycle is nature’s way of “purifying” water.
 Impure water samples contain suspended matter (large chunks you can see) and
dissolved matter (tiny particles you cannot see).
 Conductivity is used in this lab to
measure water’s purity. Pure water does
not conduct electricity. The more
impurities present, the more a water
sample conducts electricity.
QuickTime™ and a
TIFF (Uncompressed) decompressor
are needed to see this picture.
 Decant – To carefully pour off the top
layer of a mixture.
 Filtrate – The liquid collected after
filtration.
 Clean Glassware is important here!!!
