“The Lottery” Persuasive Letter
You will write a letter to Mr. Summers from the short story, ‘The Lottery,” that
persuades him to continue OR discontinue this vicious ritual. Your grade will be
based on how well you apply your knowledge of Aristotle’s keys to effective
persuasion. Follow the format below to be eligible for full credit.
Paragraph 1, Ethos:
Introduce yourself (remaining anonymous for safety purposes. . . remember
Old Man Warner’s tirade) by sharing elements of your ethos. What makes you
worthy of being heard? Who are you? Why should Mr. Summers care enough to
read your letter?
Paragraph 2, Logos:
Present three reasons why the town should continue or discontinue this
practice. Be sure your reasons are sound and reasonable and support your goal.
Paragraph 3, Pathos:
End the letter by appealing to the reader’s emotions. . . what can you write
that would invoke an emotional response to aid your argument?
Sign off as “ A Concerned Citizen”
