GERUNDS AND INFINITIVES

When two verbs follow each other, the second verb can be:
a) an infinitive  ( to + verb / verb)
b) a gerund  (verb + ing)


THE TO INFINITIVE IS USED:
After certain verbs: AFFORD, AGREE, ARRANGE, CHOOSE, DECIDE, EXPECT,
HOPE, LEARN, MANAGE, NEED, OFFER, PLAN, PROMISE, REFUSE, SEEM,
USED TO, VOLUNTEER, WANT…
I used to smoke when I was younger.
He doesn´t want to give me another opportunity.

THE INFINITIVE WITHOUT TO IS USED:

After modal and auxiliary verbs: They may arrive late
Does your mother work here?

After make / let + OBJECT:

My parents don´t let me have a piercing.
She made me work very hard.
THE GERUND IS USED:

As the subject of the sentence (replacing an infinitive): Climbing isn´t easy.
Studying is boring.

After prepositions and phrasal verbs:
I am tired of waiting for him.
He gave up smoking last year.

GERUNDS AND INFINITIVES
Some verbs can be followed either by a gerund or an infinitive without any change in
their meaning in the simple present or past tenses :

BEGIN / START /
LIKE / LOVE / ADORE / PREFER / HATE
I like cooking / I like to cook on Sundays.
However, they must be followed by the infinitive in the conditional:
I’d love to see you soon.
