COMMUNITY EDUCATOR
QUALIFICATIONS






Bachelor’s degree in education.
Three (3) years of successful teaching experience.
Experience working in multi-cultural community.
Knowledge of community resources.
Instructional technology knowledge and experience preferred.
Must be able to work flexible hours. (school term - Mon.-Thurs. 12:30p.m. - 9:00p.m. and Sat. 9:00a.m. - noon)
summer term - Mon. - Thurs. daytime)

POSITION GOAL
To develop and implement a community-based learning center, “The Harbor” (If every child had a safe
harbor, none would be at-risk).
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
1. * Establish a learning center (The Harbor) in the Sanford Housing Authority (Castle Brewer Court) that will provide
extended learning time for students in a safe learning environment.
2. * Establish a cadre of community volunteers to provide homework assistance and tutoring after school and Saturdays.
3. * Develop a relationship with the Sanford Police Department to promote positive interaction between children in the
housing community and law enforcement.
4. * Promote development of adult and child literacy skills, to include adult basic education activities and parent training
skills.
5. * Establish opportunities for the adults and children to learn together in the same environment.
6. * Operate a computer assisted instructional program for children and adults, training participants and volunteers as
necessary.
7. * Establish and maintain a reading corner to encourage children in the development of reading as a fun activity.
8. * Liaison with the teachers of the students participating in the activities of The Harbor, to promote continuity of their
education.
9. * Train parents to become volunteers in The Harbor.
10. * Train parents to become involved in their children’s education at school and in the community.
11. * Maintain appropriate records.
12. * Network with community agencies to secure support and assistance.
13. * Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Special Projects.
