Lab Report Guidelines: Comparison of Onion and Cheek Cells
Assignment: For this lab, you will complete a modified lab report that includes a title,
introduction, result section, and a conclusion. Be sure to label each section and to
sequence the report properly. Use the guide to make sure that you include the proper
information.
Introduction:
In your introduction, state a purpose and rationale for this activity. You do not need to
include a hypothesis.
Results:
Be sure to include the following in your Results section:

Diagram onion cells and cheek cells under low, medium, and high power.

Label each diagram and tell the total magnification.

Label the cell wall, cytoplasm, nucleus, and chloroplast (if present) of onion cells.

Label the cell membrane, cytoplasm, and nucleus of cheek cells.

Diagram and label the bacteria cells under high power.

Estimate the average length and width (in micrometers) an onion cell.

Estimate the average diameter (in micrometers) of a human cheek cell.

Estimate the size of a single bacterium (cell).
Conclusion:
In your conclusion section, tell the differences and similarities between the onion (plant)
cells and cheek (animal) cells based on your observations and your reference materials.
Also explain the differences between the bacteria cells and the eukaryotes (plant & animal
cells). Explain the reasons behind these differences and similarities. You may create a
table that compares and contrasts the cell types to include in your conclusion.
Suggested vocabulary: You should be able to apply the following terms in your writing.
Eukaryotic cell
Prokaryotic cell
Organelle
Cell membrane
Cell wall
Chloroplast
Cytoplasm
Nucleus
Wet mount
Methylene blue
