Figurative Language Helps You Get the Job Done!
In pursuit of your lifelong dream of becoming a sportscaster, you have finally been called for an
interview with a major television network. You’ve been informed that at this interview, your
goal will be to impress the interview committee with your oral presentation skills and your
dazzling descriptive commentary of a sporting event.
You first need to choose which sporting event you’ll recap during this interview and then create
a commentary (A.K.A. a speech) in which you highlight the important moments during the
game. Since you’re trying to get hired for a permanent job, you want to delight your audience
with your use of at least four original examples of figurative language to help you describe the
event. Boring old sports clichés are not going to land you this job! Also, you’ll need to make sure
your commentary fits the time limit (45 seconds-1 minute long) and that you deliver this brief
speech in an animated and enthusiastic way.
Before your broadcast, you must submit a typed copy of your speech with all examples of
figurative language underlined. Remember to keep a copy for yourself so that you can practice
until the time of your interview.
The interview committee will assess your commentary based on the following criteria:

which the committee would like to hear your description and commentary of a commercial
shown during the Super Bowl. Your goal is to describe the commercial using at least four
examples of original figurative language to showcase your creative talents. Then you’ll need to
provide your evaluation of the effectiveness of the commercial. Before your interview, you must
submit a typed copy of your speech with all examples of figurative language underlined.
Remember to keep a copy for yourself so that you can practice until the time of your interview.
The committee will evaluate your interview based on the same time limit and guidelines as

Event: New York Giants VS. Green Bay Packers (NFC Championship Game)
Date: 1/20/08
Commentary:
On the hallowed grounds of Lambeau Field, a game for the ages unfolded to the delight
of NFL fans around the globe. The game was deemed Ice Bowl II due to the fact that three
opponents took the field; the Green Bay Packers, the New York Giants, and Mother Nature’s
cold, cruel, crew of ice and wind. Before the kickoff, the whipping winds whispered into the
players’ helmets telling them to give up and go home; however, the Giants, Packers, and their
thousands of fans would not be defeated by the sub-zero temperatures. All night long the two
teams traded punches like heavyweight boxers going toe to toe in the ring. Hampered by a
football made of ice and fingertips numbed with pain, each player pushed on and fought to the
bitter end.
At the end of regulation, the score was locked up at 20-20. A champion had not been
crowned, and a hero waited to save the day. With a flip of the coin, destiny and a trip to the
Super Bowl was in the hands of Green Bay’s Brett Favre. A quick toss to the right side of the
field proved to be a costly mistake for the Packers, and a new lease on life for the downtrodden
Giants. Three unsuccessful plays later, a lowly Lawrence Tynes took the field. He had already
missed a thousand field goal attempts in this game alone. He prepared himself and stomped
down the icy grass around his launch pad. Zip! The ball flew back to his holder. One step. Two
steps. THUD! The football was a bullet, splitting the uprights and directly piercing the hearts of
80,000 Packers fans in attendance. The final score was 23-20, Giants over the Packers! The third
“Tynes” was a charm!
