2. Stoichiometry

3. Copper Chemistry

4. Molar Mass using the Dumas Method

5. Calorimetry and Hess's Law

6. Enthalpy of Vaporization of Water

7. Acid/Base Titrations

Attendance:

You must complete all experiments. You must schedule a make-up at least 24 hours in advance with your TAs, Will Ward, or with Dr. Meyer. Make-ups will only be permitted due to serious illness or emergencies, not for vacations or because you have an exam the next day. Pre-arranged make-ups are allowed on days with no lab. All on-line assignments and written work will be due at the regularly scheduled time, not the make-up time. Depending on the experiment and whether graded work has been returned to your classmates, you may be required to write a full lab report on the experiment.

Homework:

On-line pre-lab homework assignments are required for all the laboratory experiments.

A partial lab report will be required for 1 experiment during the session.

Tests:

A full lab report will be required for 1 experiment during the session.

Written worksheet assignments will be required for the remaining experiments.

There will be two 1-hour tests on 14 June and 26 June . The first one will cover experiments 1-4 and the second will cover experiments 5-7.

Grades :

The grade will be determined from the pre-lab assignments (10%), lab worksheets (5% each =

25%), two lab reports (10% each = 20%) and two tests (45%). The distribution of grades will vary according to the performance of the class. Exams will be biased towards experimental techniques and analysis of experimental data.

Regrading :

Questions regarding lab grading should first be discussed with the TA. If no resolution is possible, contact Professor Meyer. An exam may be submitted for regrading if you are certain you deserve more credit. This must be done within two class days of the date when the exam was returned.

The Exam paper should be handed to Dr. Meyer or Will Ward (in lecture) accompanied by concisely written comments explaining where and why you think the grading was in error. Please be aware that we may re-grade the entire exam.

Help Sessions :

Teaching Assistants (TA's) will be available during normal lab sessions (M, T, Th 12:00 – 3:00 p.m.) for help with lab questions. Additional help or review sessions that may be scheduled before exams will be announced in class.

Ethics Policy:

Ethics violations are treated very seriously: possible penalties include an F in the course, a notation on your transcript, and expulsion from the University. Violations include (but are not limited to) using material (such as books or notes) during an exam other than those specifically authorized; misrepresenting someone elses work as your own; altering an exam submitted for regrading, in any way; being in possession of another student's exam or homework (with or without their permission).

Disabilities

Any student with a disability who may need accommodations in this class must obtain an accommodation letter from Student Disability Services, 385 Garland, (410) 516-4720, studentdisabilityservices@jhu.edu.

The letter must be submitted to me with at least 1 week’s notice before accommodations can be made. New letters are required each semester.

Office Hours:

Try first to answer the questions yourself. If that does not work send the questions to me by email.

If together we still can’t work it out, send me another email and we will schedule an appointment.

If something urgent does come up, please feel free to stop by my office, call or email.
