Latin Rockers Malo; La Raza Galería Posada Event Honors Fathers of the Chicano
Arts Movement: José Montoya and Phil Esparza
(Sacramento, CA) Latino rockers Malo will be joined by several new acts to the concert lineup
for "Jammin' in the Park 2" on Saturday, June 18. La Raza Galería Posada, Sacramento's not-forprofit midtown gallery and cultural center, is bringing back their highly successful family day of
Latino celebration with music, poetry, food, arts & crafts. Advance tickets are a family friendly
$15, with children under 10 free.
This year, La Raza Galería Posada honors two Fathers of the Chicano Arts Movement-- José
Montoya and Phil Esparza-- on this Father's Day weekend event, held at Sacramento’s
downtown Cesar Chavez Park (10th & J Sts.). Gates open at noon and the event runs from 2 pm6 pm. DJ Nightfly, who rocked the 10,000 capacity crowd at Sacramento’s SacMoFo Festival in
April, will spin until Royal Chicano Air Force co-founder and vibrant octogenarian, Esteban Villa,
hits the stage. Villa has just released his new CD, Habanero Honey.
Los Elegantes, the 10-piece Sacramento favorite (originally from Stockton, beginning in 1967)
brings traditional Rancheras, Cumbias and Boleros plus pulsating Latin Jazz, Merenque and
Salsa. Singer/guitarist/songwriter Blanca Sandoval and her band and were a big hit last year and
return to open for their Bay Area musical colleagues, Malo.
The 12-piece Latin Rock legend Malo, starring guitarist Jorge Santana and lead singer Arcelio
Garcia, thrilled the capacity crowd last year –and are celebrating their 40th anniversary this
year.

Festival Honorees
This year’s event touts the life work of two Fathers of the Chicano Arts Movement:
José Montoya and Phil Esparza.
José Montoya: One of the most influential Chicano bilingual poets and artists and Sacramento's
poet laureate, José Montoya co-founded the Royal Chicano Air Force (RCAF) in 1969. An artists’
collective internationally recognized for its mural and poster work, the RCAF is important for its
synthesis of creative expression and community activism. Montoya’s own work depicts
everyday barrio life and urban types through visual art, poetry, and song lyrics. His portraits and
poems on the pachuco connect the sensibilities of Chicano and Beat vernacular expression.
Phil Esparza: With over forty years experience in the performing arts as an actor, technical
director, administrator and producer, Esparza is the classic “man behind the curtain.” Without
him, the Chicano Theatre Movement would not be the same. Esparza is a forty year member of
El Teatro Campesino, the now-legendary troupe founded in 1965 by artist/activist Luis Valdez
on the Delano Grape Strike picket lines of Cesar Chavez’s United Farmworkers Union. The
company created and performed “actos” or short skits on flatbed trucks and in union halls. Now
based in San Juan Bautista, California El Teatro Campesino has set the standard for Latino
theatrical production in the United States.
Esparza has managed world-wide, national and regional tours of live, video and film
productions including writer Valdez’s Zoot Suit (play & film), La Bamba (the film), La Pastorela
(play & film) and The Cisco Kid (TNT film).
