He wanted to divorce his wife, Catherine of Aragon, and marry Anne Boleyn, but the pope
wouldn’t grant him a divorce because it was against the church’s beliefs. He then
denounced the pope and started his own church, the Church of England.

Queen Mary was dying and she knew Queen Elizabeth was next in line to be queen.
Mary did not want Elizabeth to be queen because she would denounce the Catholic Church
Since Mary’s father had divorced her mother and denounced the pope in order to marry
Elizabeth’s mother, Mary wanted to bring back the Catholic Church to England (out of
spite)
