Rationale

Learning and playing Volleyball promotes physical activity, develops hand-eye coordination, and helps students develop a broader understanding of sports as a whole.

Playing volleyball increases agility and promotes a healthy body through mobility.

Volleyball is easy to learn and open for all ages making it a very sociable sport.

Duration

The class will meet for five weeks, Monday through Thursday from 1:00 p.m. to 1:50 p.m.

Skills, Strategies, and Procedures to be Taught

Overhand/Underhand pass

Spike

Serve (Overhand/Underhand)

“W” Serve reception

Overhand pass drills

Students lie on their back and set ball straight above head 20 times in row

Students sit with a partner sit 10 feet apart and practice set ball back and forth.

Underhand pass drills

Students will bump ball against wall, focusing on timing and control

Students will stand with a partner about 20 feet apart and bump the ball back and forth

Serving drills

Students stand near a wall and serve ball at the floor, aiming to get the ball to bounce from the floor to the wall and back at them

Students begin a progression for serving. Start close to the net and slowly move back

Spiking drills

Students stand near a wall and serve ball at the floor, aiming to get the ball to bounce from the floor to the wall and back at them

Students set up spike lines: line up along the sideline with a ball in hand. They will toss the ball to a setter who returns it for a spike

Blocking drills

Students will participate in plyometric workouts to develop leg power and vertical leap

Students will set up spike lines. This time, add one, two, or three blockers for each spike

Assessment of and Provisions for Individual Differences

The students will be given a variety of drills and activities with standards for success given. If a student finds that they are doing poorly in any area of the class they must feel like they must practice and/or study in that given area. If a student finds this class below their skill level then they may either take a separate class or stay in at their choosing. The instructor will employ an individual developmental learning approach.
