AP Assignment: The Scarlet Letter
Today you will receive a copy of The Scarlet Letter. While you read the novel, you
will need to keep a dialectical journal. Please see the explanation and example on
pages 42-43 of your textbook. Your journal will be submitted through Google
Classroom, and therefore, will be typed (12 font, Times New Roman) and should
include 25 thoughtful and well written entries. Do NOT wait to write until you
have finished reading the book; please write as you read. Because of the amount
of material we need to cover in this class, we will not have reading quizzes. It is
your job to finish the book and dialectical journal by October 22nd. Here is a
sample reading schedule to help you manage your time:
September 15: Begin book. Read introduction (Custom House) this week. (This is
the most difficult part of the book. Check your comprehension by looking on
Spark Notes or Cliff Notes)
Sept 19-Timed Writing; Subject/Verb Agreement assignments due on
noredink.com
Week of 9/22—9/26
Read chapters 1-8
Sept 22- Quiz on Subject/Verb Agreement in class
Sept 26-Test on Unit #2 Vocabulary
Week of 9/29--10/3
Read chapters 9-17
Week of 10/6-- 10/10
Read chapters 18-24 Oct. 9-Test on Units #1-3 Vocabulary (This is a Thursday)
Week of 10/13—10/17 plus weekend of 10/18-10/19
Put finishing touches on dialectical journal. Revise, proofread, and edit.
10/20-10/21
Take care of any technical difficulties with turning in the assignment
10/22—Dialectical Journals are due. (It is due at the beginning of class. It must be
turned in through Google Class by the time class starts (1:30pm) or will be
considered late.)
10/22—Test on The Scarlet Letter. Please return book at the end of this class.
Oct. 24-Test on Unit #4 Vocabulary
Note: Please resist the urge to take short cuts or to plagiarize. You will not learn or grow as a
reader/writer if you do this. Also, not only your grade but also your reputation as a student
with integrity will be damaged.
