Alston-Pleasants Post-Graduate Scholars Fund Trustee Appointed
September 18, 2015. Hon. Rebecca C. Spragins, Clerk of the Halifax County Superior
Court, has appointed Dennis W. Organ, an Alston-Pleasants Scholar and 1966
graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH), to serve as a
Trustee of the Alston-Pleasants Post-Graduate Scholars Fund.
Professor Organ, a former Roanoke Rapids resident, is Emeritus Professor of
Management at the Indiana University School of Business. He earned his Ph.D. in
Organizational Behavior from UNC in 1970 and joined the faculty at Indiana
University that same year, where he remained for 38 years.
Dennis has been an energetic and substantial contributor to the growth of the
Alston-Pleasants community. In 2013, he made a generous contribution to the
Alston-Pleasants Post-Graduate Scholars Fund in memory of the late Joseph Talley,
former Principal of Roanoke Rapids High School and Superintendent of Schools in
the city. He also writes a regular series of profiles for the Alston-Pleasants
Newsletter, which highlight the interests and accomplishments of Alston-Pleasants
Scholars and other members of the AP community.
Professor Organ joins current Fund Trustees Helen N. Parker, retired Regional
Administrator for the Employment and Training Administration/US Department of
Labor, and J. Gilbert Stallings, retired Assistant General Counsel of the Metropolitan
Life Insurance Company. Both Dr. Parker and Mr. Stallings were also AlstonPleasants Scholars.
The Fund was established in 2008 to provide graduate and professional studies
scholarships to recipients of the Alston-Pleasants Scholarships established by
Missouri Alston Pleasants in 1958 for selected undergraduate UNC-CH students
from Franklin, Halifax and Warren Counties.
