Van Helsing compares Dracula to a tiger because once the Count sets his mind on
something; he will get it at all costs. He has endless time and patience, but he will always
be back for more, just like a tiger. Dracula is a man-eater; just like the Indian tiger is said

dream?
The red scar on Mina’s forehead is a constant reminder that Dracula and the

Van Helsing proposes to keep Mina in the dark about the group’s plan because
Mina is changing slowly into a vampire. Van Helsing fears that Dracula can access

1. What does Van Helsing learn from Mina in her hypnotic state?
There are no waves lapping, just a steady swirl of water. Men’s voices call from
near and far, and Mina can hear the oars in the rowlocks. There are feet moving
overhead and chains and ropes move before there is a gleam of light and there is air
blowing upon her. Mina then rises from her prostrate position and seemingly pushes a
weight off of her, palms upward. (473-474)
2. What seems to be happening to Mina’s hypnotic trances?
Mina seems to be less and less responsive to the hypnotic trance. (475-476)

of their captain?
The Romanians wanted the captain to throw a wooden box overboard that had

the others.
Mina seems to become bright, radiant, and thoughtful when she and Van Helsing
separate from the others. (499-501)
11. What precaution does Van Helsing take when he and Mina are forced to sleep outside
for the night?
Van Helsing spreads a ring of the Wafer around in a circle so not vampires could
enter and harm him or Mina. (503)

Van Helsing sees the very same three Brides of Dracula that Jonathan saw when
he visited the castle. (505)
