Welcome to Medical Tech Prep
Dear Students and Parents/Guardian,
Congratulations on your decision to make Medical Tech Prep a part of your high
school experience. I feel confident that you have made a decision in which you
will be proud.
The Medical Tech Prep program is designed to be a basic background to prepare
students to further their education for a career in the health field. The junior
program will focus on providing students with a general health care foundation
that will lead to a more focused study in the senior year. The junior course will
offer the opportunity to earn college credit in for and introductory allied health
course from Sinclair Community College. The course will also include nurse
assisting training and will offer coordinated clinical experiences in selected
nursing care facilities in Greenville. This training will give the student skills in
communicating and interacting with patients, as well as basic care skills.
Community CPR and First Aid certification will also be included. This is a good
background for students going into any aspect of the health care business.
The senior program will provide students with the opportunity to earn 6 hours of
college credit in Medical Terminology. In addition, the students will participate in
field experiences in chosen areas. Five 1-week mentorship rotations will be
coordinated with students and health care providers in the Greenville area.
Through these rotations, students will benefit from working with health care
professionals in actual health care facilities. Experiencing this mentoring
relationship and gaining realistic experience in chosen fields of interest is one
focus of the senior program. Seniors will also have the opportunity to receive
college credit for EKG and phlebotomy courses. They will have the opportunity
to test and receive credit for an elementary algebra class from Sinclair as well.
This handbook is designed to provide a guideline for the upcoming year. Please
review this book for a better understanding of how the Medical Tech Prep
program is organized. Also please note that students are expected to provide
their own transportation to clinical sites and field trips within Greenville. A
separate permission form will be coming home regarding transportation.
If the student or parent/guardian has any questions regarding this handbook or
the program, please bring them to my attention. I welcome your comments
and/or suggestions. My voice mail at the high school is 548-4188 x864. I can
also be reached by email at rcook22@woh.rr.com. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Regina Cook, RN, MS
Medical Tech Prep Instructor

Teacher Expectations and Student Responsibilities
Conduct:
Uniforms:
Students are expected to conduct themselves in such
a way that they respect and consider the rights of
others. Medical Tech Prep students should exhibit
professional behavior.
Students are expected to wear uniforms to class on
the designated day as determined by the class.
Uniform includes blue scrubs with white shoes and
watch with a second hand.
Grooming:
All students are to look as clean and neat as possible
at all times. Students should look professional.
Characteristics of a health professional will be
discussed in class.
Assignments:
All assignments are to be completed and turned in per
instruction of the teacher. Points may be deducted for
late or sloppy assignments – 10% off grade for each
day late. Once an assignment has been graded and
returned, late papers will no longer be accepted.
Make-up work:
All work missed because of excused absences must
be completed according to teacher guidelines. Work
missed due to unexcused absence cannot be made
up. It is the students responsibility to discuss any
missed work with the teacher.
Cheating:
Students are often encouraged to work together, but
are responsible for doing their own work. Disciplinary
action will be taken if cheating occurs.
Clinicals/Rotations: Students must show evidence of being able to accept
responsibility of clinical experience. Students must
assume the responsibility for transportation to and
from the clinical/rotation site. The student must not
perform any tasks without the proper training. If the
student feels unsafe in any way while at
clinical/rotation, they must report this to the teacher
right away.
SkillsUSA:
Students are expected to participate in SkillsUSA
activities.
III. Student Safety
Safety Procedures
HEALTH REQUIREMENTS FOR CLINICAL EXPERIENCE:
All students must have a physical on file before beginning the clinical
portion of the course. Students are also required to have a two-step Mantoux TB
skin test and begin the hepatitis B immunization series before clinicals. The TB
test and hepatitis B immunizations can be obtained at the Darke County Health
Department. The cost for the hepatitis B immunization is $8.00 and the TB test is
$10.00 for students through age 18. More information on these requirements will
be provided in class.
GENERAL CLASSROOM AND LAB SAFETY PROCEDURES:
Each student must be aware of others safety at all times. This means no
horseplay. A simple innocent prank, such as pulling a chair out from under
someone, throwing objects or wrestling around with a friend can be very
dangerous. Please be aware of this at all times, and protect others by stopping
this sort of behavior immediately. Students will be practicing many of the nurse
assistant skills on each other in the laboratory. It is imperative that students keep
safety in mind and refrain from horseplay.
ACCIDENT REPORTING:
In the event of an accident during classtime or clinical, the teacher must
be notified immediately. The teacher will then notify the main office if medical
attention is necessary.
STUDENT SAFETY TRAINING:
All students will participate in required training and achieve a passing
grade on each individual topic. There will be safety topics presented throughout
the year. Safety reviews will be done on a continuous basis.
UNIVERSAL PRECAUTIONS:
Universal precautions deal with the proper handling of blood and body
fluids that could be potentially infectious. All students will be trained in universal
precautions and must prove competence in this area prior to any clinical
experiences.

STUDENT AGREEMENT
I agree to observe the above safety rules and procedures. I realize that safety is important, is
partially my own responsibility, and that my ability to belong to the Medical Tech Prep program
depends on me developing safe work habits. I understand that these rules apply while in the
school, or when I am at my clinical experiences, outside of school. I have read the above safety
agreement and I understand that failure to follow these rules and regulations will subject me to
disciplinary action by the teacher and/or administrator.
