OVERNIGHT STORIES
---MANNING, COLTS STEAL THE DOLPHINS' SHOW: While the Miami Dolphins'
celebrities were making a Hollywood-style grand entrance, Peyton Manning slipped in a side
door. Manning threw two touchdown passes to take some sheen off the Dolphins' glitzy
makeover under new owner Stephen Ross, and the Indianapolis Colts came from behind
four times to win 27-23 Monday night. The Dolphins rolled out an orange carpet for the
pregame arrival of Ross' celebrity partners. The crowd included Serena and Venus Williams,
Gloria and Emilio Estefan, Marc Anthony and Jennifer Lopez, Jimmy Buffett and Colts
rooter Tiger Woods. But Manning stole the show with touchdown passes of 80 yards to
Dallas Clark and 48 yards to Pierre Garcon. The first came score on the first play from
scrimmage, the latter with 3:18 left for the game's final points.
--NFL, NFLPA REINFORCE DRUG POLICY (Credit Chris Mortensen): After months of
early growing pains in their new relationship, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and NFL
Players Association Executive Director DeMaurice Smith sent a joint memo Monday to
some 1,700 players to reinforce the league's collective bargained policy on anabolic steroids
and related substances. In a copy of the memo obtained by ESPN, Goodell and Smith
referred to the controversy and subsequent rulings regarding a banned substances contained
in a supplement called "StarCaps." Goodell last week ruled that Saints defensive ends
Charles Grant and Will Smith can continue playing because of a court ruling that keeps
prevents the league from suspending Vikings defensive tackles Kevin and Pat Williams for
testing positive for the same supplement. The court case remains active without final
resolution.
---ROYALS COME BACK TO TOPPLE RED SOX: Mike Jacobs hit a three-run homer
and Alberto Callaspo's two-run double keyed Kansas City's biggest inning in almost a year,
rallying the Royals past the Boston Red Sox 12-9 on Monday night. After falling behind 6-0
in the third and 8-2 in the fifth, the Royals seized an 11-9 lead with six runs in the sixth, the
most they've scored in one inning since Sept. 24, 2008. Billy Butler had an RBI double off
Manny Delcarmen and then Callaspo hit a two-run double. Yuniesky Betancourt finished it
off with a two-run single off Daniel Bard (2-2).
Butler had another RBI double in the seventh, giving him 49 doubles this season.
---SAUNDERS, ANGELS KEEP YANKEES AT BAY: Joe Saunders pitched into the
ninth inning and the Los Angeles Angels prevented the Yankees from wrapping up a playoff
spot, beating New York 5-2 on Tuesday night in a matchup of division leaders. Vladimir
Guerrero and Torii Hunter hit consecutive RBI doubles off Yankees starter Andy Pettitte,
and Kendry Morales added a pinch-hit homer. The Angels earned their 90th victory for the
seventh time in nine seasons and reduced their magic number to six for clinching their third
consecutive AL West title. The Yankees, who have dropped six of 10, could have secured a
postseason spot with a win or a Texas loss at Oakland. The Rangers beat the Athletics 10-3.
---TWINS PICK UP MORE GROUND ON TIGERS: Nick Blackburn pitched seven
innings and Orlando Cabrera led the offense Monday night as the Minnesota Twins
continued their late surge with a 7-0 victory over the Chicago White Sox. The Twins, who
have won five of six, moved within 2½ games of first-place Detroit, which was idle, in the
AL Central. The fading White Sox lost for the fifth time in six games and are seven back.

--KIFFIN TAKES SHOT AT MEYER: Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin says he put his

at Gators coach Urban Meyer.
Meyer said Sunday that he kept his game plan conservative in No. 1 Florida's 23-13 win after
he felt the Vols didn't appear to be playing for a win. He also said several of his players had
been hit by the flu. Kiffin said Monday that he didn't want to respond to Meyer's comment.
But when asked whether he was worried about the flu hitting Tennessee, Kiffin had this to
say: "I don't know. I guess we'll wait and after we're not excited about a performance, we'll
tell you everybody was sick." Also says, in reference to Meyer comments on Tennessee not
playing to win the game, "This offseason the commissioner made a big deal of renewing

pick Michael Crabtree, Jets coach Rex Ryan confirmed Monday. "My understanding is they
filed charges with the league," Ryan said. "I'm saying my response is it's not true. I mean, it's
not accurate. It's not true, but, hey, we'll let the league figure this out." When asked Monday
if his team filed charges, 49ers coach Mike Singletary said it's a situation "the league is going

--CHAPMAN STARTS PATH TO FREE AGENCY: Aroldis Chapman - the Cuban
defector considered to be one of the top pitching prospects in the world - petitioned Major
League Baseball for his free agency on Thursday and is likely only weeks from becoming a
free agent, according to his agent. Early today, Chapman's representatives announced that
the pitcher has established residency in Andorra - a tiny country of about 84,000 people that
borders Spain and France. By establishing residency outside of the United States, Chapman
avoids being subject to the amateur draft. MLB must investigate Chapman's residency and
legal paperwork before they declare him a free agent. The Yankees have already shown
interest in the Cuban lefty, whose fastball was clocked at 102 mph at the World Baseball
Classic this year. Chapman defected from the Cuban national team in August during a
tournament in Rotterdam, the Netherlands and has been living in Barcelona, Spain.

and finding solutions to our problems really than anything else going on." ... "We controlled
the first half we just didn't get the ball in the red zone - the end zone when we had the
