Location: Easter Island (Pacific Ocean)
Date: Found in 1722
Structure: Carved from hardened volcanic ash
Interesting facts: They stand with their back to the sea and
are believed to represent the spirits of high-ranking males who held
important positions in the history of Easter Island, or Rapa Nui (the
name given by the indigenous people to the island). There are 887
statues on the island.
