1. What is the setting of the first part of the story?
Dracula begins in the month of May (P. 1). Jonathan travels through Transylvania on his
way to Count Dracula’s castle, stopping in Klausenburgh (P. 1) and Bistritz (P. 4). He
rides two coaches (P. 7 & 13-14) on his way to the castle. Once he reaches it (P. 19-20),
he remains there with the Count.
2. What does Jonathan Harker find waiting for him when he arrives at the Golden Krone
Hotel?
Jonathan has a letter from the Count waiting for him at the Hotel. It informs him of the
coach that will take him to Dracula’s castle. (P. 5)
3. Why does the hotel landlady beg Jonathan not to continue his journey?
The landlady begs Jonathan not to go that night because it is the eve of St. George’s Day.
At midnight that night, “all the evil things in the world have full sway.” She believes
either Dracula is evil, or that Jonathan will encounter something on his trip that is. (P. 6)

Jonathan notices a number of strange things on his carriage ride. First, he notices that the

on the side of the road (P. 17).

The Count was a tall old man with a long, white mustache that wore entirely black

Jonathan notices two things completely absent from the castle. The first thing missing is

When Jonathan tells the Count he wants to leave that night, the Count leads him through
the castle. They get to a door that Jonathan hears snarling wolves behind, and he gets
nervous. He believed that Dracula would feed him to the wolves. (P. 68)
18. What does Jonathan Harker find when he goes back to the Count’s room to look for a
key to the door?
Jonathan doesn’t see anything in Dracula’s “room,” and continues down to the chapel
where he saw him sleeping. One of the boxes that the Slovaks brought had a lid on it, so
Jonathan lifted it up to check inside. Dracula was lying inside, asleep, with blood
trickling from his mouth.

8. Describe Renfield’s systematic way of collecting lives.
First, Renfield would attract a small animal. Then he gave those small animals to a
slightly larger one. He would continue that chain as long as he could. He started with
flies, which he got by giving them some of his food. Renfield fed the flies to spiders, and
then gave the spiders to sparrows. He was going to give those sparrows to a cat, but Dr.
Seward would not get him one. Instead, he ate the sparrows himself.
9. What unusual thing does Renfield eat? Why?
The first unusual thing Renfield ate in front of Dr. Seward was a fly (P. 94). Later, Dr.
Seward was told that he ate all of the sparrows he had collected raw. He seemed to have
done this because Seward refused to let him get a cat, which would eat the sparrows and
continue the chain. (P. 97)
10. What odd, recent behavior of Lucy is disturbing to Mina?
Lucy began sleepwalking again, and that bothers Mina. (P. 98)

1. Describe the mysterious schooner’s entrance into the harbor.
The ship entered the harbor in a very odd way. It started earlier in the day, when Mina
saw that it was just moving back and forth randomly. This was odd, because there was a
large storm coming, and most ships were heading for port. During the storm later, the
schooner was seen entering the harbor, still being steered haphazardly. An onlooker
notices that there is only one person tied to the wheel, and he isn’t moving. The ship was
at the mercy of the waves, but luckily made it onto the nearby beach. (P. 107-108)
2. What is discovered on board the mysterious schooner?
The crowd that saw the ship run aground rushed to it after it stopped. The first ones there
found that the man tied to the ship was actually dead. In his hands were a crucifix and an
addendum to the ship’s log. (P. 109-110)
3. What is the name of the schooner, and where did she come from?
The schooner was called the Demeter, and it was traveling from Varna, Russia. (P. 110)
4. What is the only living thing on the ship?
The only living thing left on the ship was a dog, which jumped off the schooner as soon
as it hit ground and ran away. (P. 111)
5. According to the captain’s addendum to the ship’s log, what happened to the men on
the ship?
At first, the captain just thought the men were disappearing, like everyone else. Later, he
believed that his first mate killed all of them. When he sees the mysterious figure, he
thinks it may have done it, also. (P. 117)
6. Describe what the captain saw on the last night aboard ship.
The captain doesn’t describe what he saw in great detail. He calls the being “Him” and
“It” in his log, and seems genuinely frightened by it. Seeing “It” is what causes him to tie
himself to the wheel with the crucifix. (P. 117)
7. What happens to the old man who had befriended Mina and Lucy?
Mr. Swales was found dead early on the 11th. He died when his neck was broken after
falling back in his chair, as if frightened. (P. 119)
