Program Overview
The ASU Career Services and Alumni Association Job Shadow Program pairs students with a job shadow host for a short-term
shadow experience during the fall and spring semesters. This program is designed to create a bridge to the world of work and gives
you the opportunity to host a student at your workplace and provide information about your profession, industry, and organization.
Students will be able to see what the work environment is like, learn more about career areas, and gather information integral to
their future education and career decisions.
Job shadow hosts may be working in any capacity within an organization, from administration to the ‘front lines’ and multiple
students may shadow with any given organization. There is no sponsorship fee, academic credit or student compensation
associated with the program.
Registration
To become a Job Shadow Host, please complete the online registration through your Sun Devil CareerLink account here.
Time Commitment
The duration of the job shadow experience is at the discretion of both the host and the student participants; however, we do require
that students shadow for at least 4 hours and many are single, half-day experiences. Full-day opportunities are recommended to
maximize the career development experience. Hosts are encouraged to continue connecting with students in a mentorship capacity
during the spring.
Confidentiality
Host’s contact information will remain confidential until matches have been approved and announced by Career Services. Once the
match has been approved, hosts and shadows will be provided with the contact information for their match.
Host/Shadow Matches and Introductions
Matches will be made using various criteria, including the student’s degree program and career aspirations, as well as the host’s
profession, industry, and organization. Matches will be announced to students and employers via email, with a “Meet your Match”
networking event to follow at ASU (location TBA) hosted by Career Services and Alumni Association.
Please Note: As Career Services is dedicated to making the most appropriate, successful host/shadow matches, there is a
possibility that some registrants may not be paired with a student shadow during the current semester. Unmatched registrants will
be notified by email and remain on the host roster to be contacted for future participation in subsequent semesters.
Employer Orientation
A short orientation required for all hosts will be conducted by webinar/conference call two weeks prior to the start of the shadow
period. The orientation should take approximately 30 minutes and will contain all pertinent information about the program and
provide you with an opportunity to ask questions.
Suggested Shadow Experience Activities
It is the responsibility of the student and their host to arrange the job shadow experience.
The shadowing agenda is developed by the host. Job shadow participants may be included in a variety of activities including
meetings, visits with clients and colleagues, networking activities, business lunches, observation of daily work, company tours, etc.
Any and all involvement that a host believes will help the shadow participant better understand the world of work, job
responsibilities, company, and industry is encouraged. Students are expected to dress in business casual attire unless otherwise
specified by the host.
Please feel free to contact our office for sample agendas or additional ideas for the shadow experience.
