#100-15335-24 Avenue
Surrey, BC V4A 9V8
Dear Mr. Kendall:
Thank you for agreeing to interview me as a work experience student.
Mrs. Carter, my Career Counsellor, has asked me to contact you to
arrange an interview and discuss my placement at your store.
I am currently enrolled in Grade 11 at Frank Hurt Secondary School. I
enjoy most subject areas at school, in particular, Math and Science. I
am active in clubs and play on the school’s Senior Girls’ Soccer Team.
Last summer, while working as a camp counsellor I had the opportunity
to work along side other counsellors in a team environment. I believe
the team experiences I shared will serve me well as a member of your
staff.
I would appreciate an opportunity to meet with you and can be reached
at the number listed below in the evening. I will be glad to make myself
available for an interview at your convenience.
Thank you for your time and consideration.

COVER LETTERS
The main purpose of a cover letter is to
introduce yourself to potential employers and to show
you’ve got some great skills. The more care you
put into your letter, the greater chances of getting an interview. The
cover letter is an important marketing tool that tells the employer why
you are the right person for the job.
Introduction
The first paragraph describes why you are writing. Start the paragraph
by explaining how you heard about the job, whether from a friend, an ad
or otherwise. This is especially important if you have been referred by a
mutual acquaintance as it shows you have a connection to the company.
Your skills and experience
This paragraph provides an overview of your skills and experience. This
is where you pick the most relevant elements from your resume and
highlight them – sort of like a sneak preview. Pick the top three
characteristics that make you stand out as a candidate and support your
statements with concrete examples. Your resume will fill in the details.
Why you want the job
In the third paragraph describe why you want the job. Explain your
attraction to the job, the firm or even the industry. Focus on why the
job would be a good match for you and how your combined skills,
experience and interest would make you a perfect candidate.
Closing
Summarize by restating your interest in the position. Mention your
enclosed resume and confirm your contact details, in particular your
phone number. Unless the employer has specifically requested no phone
calls, say you will be in contact within a particular time frame (and follow
through!)
