GW Undergraduate Research Fellowships 2013-14
COMMON APPLICATION FORM
GW undergraduate research fellowships give promising undergraduates the opportunity to engage in a well-defined
research project under the guidance of a faculty member in the chosen field of study. Research experiences not only
provide challenges and depth to students’ education, but also strengthen their applications for national fellowships and for
graduate and professional school.
Students should use the following form in order to apply for the Luther Rice Undergraduate Research Fellowship and
the GW Undergraduate Research Award (formerly the Gamow Undergraduate Research Fellowship and the
Provost/OVPR Undergraduate Research Award). Students need to submit one form only; eligible CCAS students will
be automatically considered for the Luther Rice Undergraduate Research Fellowship.
Proposed projects may or may not involve academic credit. A project could be an independent study, part of an existing
course with this enhancement for this student, or a well-structured stand-alone summer research experience. Similarly, a
project might be part of a thesis, a course, or on-going work that builds upon prior experience in a laboratory, for example.
All research projects must be undertaken with ongoing input and direction from the faculty mentor. It is expected that the
student and mentor will discuss their expectations regarding the time commitments of both parties, scope of research, and
anticipated results (e.g., papers, presentations, performances, etc.) and arrive at a mutually agreeable understanding.
STUDENT ELIGIBILITY: Student applicants must be full-time undergraduate students at GW. Students should have a
GPA of 3.4 or above. Note: Recipients must be enrolled at GW throughout the tenure of the award.
FACULTY MENTOR ELIGIBILITY: Faculty mentors must be associated with GW during the tenure of the award.
FUNDING: GW undergraduate research fellowships provide funding for research-related expenditures, including living
expenses, travel, materials, and equipment. Budgets must be feasible and must reflect the time frame of the project and
the nature of the inquiry. Student awards will ordinarily be made in the amount of $5,000.
Faculty mentors receive a stipend of $1,000. Faculty can opt to take this money as supplemental salary or ask that the
funds be transferred to a departmental account (e.g., supporting travel, equipment, supplies, etc.).
Students may request supplemental funding support if expenses related to the proposed project are expected to exceed
$5,000.
AWARD PERIOD: The project may begin during the summer and must be concluded during the spring semester of the
following year; please note: funds will be distributed after July 1, 2013.
APPLICATION: A complete application consists of a) a Student Application Form and b) a Faculty Mentor Form. By
submitting their applications, students thereby allow selection committees to review their academic transcripts.
DEADLINE: There are two deadlines for submission:
Winter Deadline: Students must submit their forms by email attachment to cufr@gwu.edu no later than 11:59pm
on Thursday, January 31, 2013.
Spring Deadline: Students must submit their forms by email attachment to cufr@gwu.edu no later than 11:59pm
on Monday, March 25, 2013.

COMMON APPLICATION FORM
Note: Students who apply in the winter and are turned down for funding may revise and resubmit their proposals in the
spring.
AWARD REQUIREMENT: All award recipients are required to submit timely progress reports on their research, to present
results of their project at Research Day, and to provide summaries of their research to publicize their undergraduate
research activity.
Please note that students may not receive more than one research fellowship award for the same project, nor may they
receive awards for different projects during the same award year.
NOTE: Applications are accepted only via email. By submitting an application, you are consenting to allow the review
committee to access your academic transcript.
