Introduction
Karelia has acquired a 3D ‘Game scenario’fro Second Life.
The SLExperiments group (and their tolerant friends!) will experience the game in order to
explore how a game show format can be used as a framework for language practice.
Preparation For Participants
Prior to the game, please
(1) see the YouTube video (13 minutes) here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0XlbS1o6opY&feature=related
It is very important to watch this or a similar game to get the ‘principles’ of the game.
Wikipedia article here in Enlgish with links to versions in different countries:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hollywood_Squares
Detailed, individual explanations on the evening would slow us down considerably!
Thanks!
(2) Look at the template below so that you can follow the basic pattern of the game
Language Teaching and Learning Rationale
The precise linguistic objective of the game can vary according to the level of the participants.
Possible objectives:
Participants will be able to ….
-
[Listening & Reading] Understand basic questions; understand the gist of the quiz
questions
[Speaking & Writing] Give basic personal details; indicate agreement / disagreement
D:\106761651.doc
7-Mar-16
The template below allows participation from all, whatever their linguistic level.
The minimum production needed
(a) from contestants is
- Say ‘heads / tails
- say the name of the person you want to choose
- say ‘I agree’ or ‘I disagree’
(b) from Lindenwooders is
- Say hello Lindenwooders (can we think of a shorter name?!!
- say your name, where you come from
- say ‘yes / no / true / false ‘ or repeat the correct response
(c ) from the audience
- gestures
The host can adapt the level according to the participant
Second Life technical preparation:
-
-
Questions and answers already prepared on a notecard – Lindenwooders, host and standin hosts are passed copies! (but of-course, people are not meant to know this!!!!)
Everything can be done in voice and text [Host will have HUD and display board]
Squares will be lettered in case people cannot see names
If (when ..) people crash, host will assign replacement or do it herself!
If Karelia crashes there will be two people ready to take the role of host (names here) .
however, be aware that only Karelia has the HUD, so the noughts and crosses and scores
will have to be recorded on pen and paper at home!!!
Volunteers will take the following roles and their names will be clear for all to see!
o Technical support for people who have technical difficulties
o Audience leader (someone to tell the audience to cheer / laugh etc!!!)
o Prize giver (someone to pass the prizes to the winners – Karelia will think
something up . possibly a board with prizes to the value of X lindens .,, or perhaps
a donation jar for ‘Relay for Life’
