Directions:
1. Below are a list of suggested activities for when you study. Each should take about
20 minutes. Each study session should produce 1-2 of the following products. Chose
the activities that help you the most. Your choice.
1. Make 10 flashcards (history or vocabulary):

You should have at least 30 total to show me total – not just the 10.
2. Write 10 sentences for the toughest vocabulary words

Write these in your notebook.
3. Bring home a Wordly Wise book and do an activity to practice IN YOUR
NOTEBOOK – You can write/rewrite answers there (at least 2 pages)
4. Outline a 5 paragraph essay for response to one of the prompts on
page 6.
5. Outline an open response for one of the prompts on page 6.
6. Write a full 5 paragraph essay based on a prompt from page 6.
7. Write a full open response based on a prompt from page 6.
8. Write down the different parts of an open response vs. a 5
paragraph composition so that you are sure to not mix them up on the
exam. Do this on flashcards…
9. Make at least 10 flashcards for each type of writing.

Include the parts of an open response and/or 5 paragraph composition.

Sample Composition Prompts

In many works of literature, a character must adjust to life in a new environment. From a
work of literature you have read in or out of school, select a character who must adjust to
life in a new environment. In a well-developed composition, identify the character,
describe how the character adjusts to life in a new environment, and explain how the
character’s adjustment relates to the work as a whole.


character, describe how journey changes the character’s life, and explain how the journey
relates to the work as a whole.

In many works of literature, a character goes through an experience that causes him or
her to gain insight and change the way he or she is living. The moment of insight is called
an epiphany. From a work of literature you have read in or out of school, select a
character who experiences an epiphany. In a well-developed composition, identify the
character, describe how the epiphany changes the character’s life, and explain how the
character’s epiphany relates to the work as a whole.

Foreshadowing is the act of presenting material that hints at events to occur later in a
story. Foreshadowing may take the form of actual plot elements or be embodied in the
mood a writer creates. From a work of literature you have read in or out of school, write
a well-developed composition in which you explain how foreshadowing is used in the
work, and describe how foreshadowing affects the reader’s experience.
