Constructing the Perfect Prison
Over the past few weeks in class we have been studying the Correctional
System. We have done work in the textbook, read outside articles, had
discussions, and watched videos on various types of prisons. The state of
Oregon has decided to build a new state penitentiary to replace the existing one.
Since you are an expert after taking Mr. Basinski’s Criminal Justice class, you
have been asked to create the “Perfect Prison.” You will be asked to sketch the
prison and describe in writing numerous and detailed aspects of your prison.
This assignment is worth 60 points. I will be looking for details in your design
and how you explain / justify your choices. You will also be graded on examples
you use from class activities in this unit (examples from various prisons).
1. Provide a detailed sketch / drawing of the prison: 30 points
a. Drawing of the entire prison (Arial view)
b. Drawing of a typical cell
2. Detailed description of the following topics: 30 Points
a. How large will your prison be? How many prisoners will it house?
Why?
b. Where in Oregon will it be located? Why? Pros and Cons of your
location.
c. Security Measures within your prison and cells.
d. Model your prison is based upon and WHY:
i. Custodial Model
ii. Rehabilitation Model
iii. Reintegration Model
e. How will you address / control inmate behavior and violence?
f. What will prisoners do? Work? Examples.
g. Daily timeline of prisoners’ activities (wake-up, head count, meals,
yard time, …)
h. How will prisoners’ rights be protected? Grievances?

What programs will be offered for prisoners and why? Education,
Training, Counseling, other?
