Thompson Valley HS Educational Technology & Information Literacy Plan 2007-2010 Thompson Valley High School Educational Technology/Information Literacy Plan 2007-2010 [2007-2008, 2008-2009, 2009-2010 School Years] Technology Committee: Instructional Technologist Quinn Van Horn Library Media Specialist Jake Pettit Administrator Lanny Hass IS/TS Technologist II Mike Hartman Art Lia Devine Business Vicki Mivhsek Counseling David Cowan Industrial Technology Language Arts Dave Gorham Christy Goldberg or Nate Hoffman Mathematics Tom Hanson Physical Education Science Kris Ayers Gerianne Short or Doug Halvorsen Social Studies Rob Porzycki Special Education Kim Carson World Languages Susan Oakley Introduction: The Thompson Valley High School (TVHS) Educational Technology/Information Literacy (ET/IL) Plan is intended to inform and guide the exploration, implementation, and use of information and technology at TVHS. This plan has been created and implemented to support the District Strategic Plan, the District ET/IL Plan, and the TVHS Action and Effectiveness Plans. Vision: Our learning community will have access to current information and technology as a part of the learning and instructional process in order to develop life skills, access information, promote literacy, enhance communications, and support content areas. Goals: Thompson Valley High School ET/IL program will: 1. provide access to current technology for our community of learners. 2. be integrated with the learning and instructional process across all content areas. 3. provide ongoing training in order to develop and enhance the transformational use of technology for our learning community. 4. facilitate information literacy skills for our community of learners. 5. be aligned with the district ET/IL plan. TSD ............................Thompson School District R2-J TVHS .........................Thompson Valley High School TSD ET/IL Plan: Vision In keeping with the mission and goals of the Thompson Strategic Plan, this district is committed to developing students to be creative thinkers, informed citizens, and productive workers. Whereas the basic educational goals have not changed drastically over the years, the tools and instructional methods to achieve these goals have advanced dramatically. In the 21st century, understanding and using technology will be an integral part of virtually every aspect of life. It is the school system’s responsibility to prepare students for this future. The classroom is the primary place where this preparation will occur; therefore, every classroom must be equipped with diverse technologies to support teaching and learning. Thompson envisions technology integrated into instruction, supporting new strategies for teaching and learning by: addressing diverse learning styles, accommodating individual learning rates, encouraging cooperative learning, helping students accept responsibility for their learning, providing the means to communicate globally, and improving academic achievement in all areas. In addition to equipping classrooms with diverse technology, the Technology Advisory Committee envisions a school district where: Stakeholders have equitable access to technology tools. Students have equitable access to learning opportunities, regardless of location. Stakeholders are information literate. Support for technology is equitable and ubiquitous for all staff and students. Systems and infrastructure are robust and adaptable. Users are technologically competent. TSD ET/IL Plan Focus Areas Through the committee and large group discussions, four focus areas emerged as the foundation of our technology vision: Access In order to prepare students for a digital world, they need equitable access to tools and opportunities that enrich their learning. In addition, Thompson is working on closing the digital divide by providing technology resources to low-income families through partnerships with nonprofit organizations. Along with these partnerships, there are specific programs at two of our high schools where students are assisting with the refurbishing and redistribution of such computers to fellow students in need. Providing email accounts to students improves their access and communication with teachers and other local and global experts. Another vision is to provide greater access to our network and data resources for administrators and other school professionals to retrieve files from remote locations. Our district staff members who responded said they frequently have the necessary access to the technology tools they need. In examining the responses there were only two categories in which staff members responded they only sometimes have access. Fortythree percent of the certified teachers who completed the survey felt they sometimes had adequate access to groups of computers or labs for student instruction. While 49% said they could sometimes depend on technology to be functional when needed. However, 43% responded by answering, “frequently.” We have made great strides in this area since the creation of our previous ET/IL plan. At the student level we had some disparities in our answers. When asked if there was a computer available for use in class, 98% of the elementary students we surveyed said yes compared to 60% of our high school students and less than half or our middle-schoolers. Information Literacy To successfully achieve this vision, Thompson must have information literate stakeholders. Imagine students accessing information from a variety of sources and locations. Not only can they locate the information, they can assess if it is credible. Teachers collaborate with media specialists to model search strategies and demonstrate age-appropriate ways to credit sources for text and media. Students connect with the local and global community through email and websites to investigate topics and collaborate with experts and peers. Student groups develop web pages to contribute information and research to the global community. Throughout these interactive and investigative projects, all stakeholders use the technology tools and information safely and ethically. Comfort level vs competency levels need to be looked at. We’ve addressed the issues and many of the staff members have had some training. As we evaluated our data we believe we’ve targeted some areas that need improvement. This is mainly related to the areas of providing more in-depth training. Copyright awareness and use was rated by staff and students as an area they were comfortable. However, members of the district committees feel as though this is a matter of perception more than a true awareness of the laws. Competency Not only does the district want to provide access to tools and opportunities, we envision our staff and students having the necessary technology skills to function in the classroom as well as in the workplace and world. Student, Teacher, Administrator, and Job-specific Classified Technology Profiles will describe the expectations for each group. In some cases, these expectations will be tied to proficiencies and evaluations. Through extensive professional development and peer coaching, these groups will be prepared to meet these necessary expectations. In examining competency, the majority of the staff members frequently marked they felt competent in most areas with the exception of professional development. In working to become competent with new tools and skills our district needs to reevaluate how we are providing professional development opportunities to all groups of staff members. At the student level 90% of the elementary students we surveyed said they were able to open, print and save a word processing document. At the secondary level 60% of our students responding rated themselves as an experienced user and 30% felt they were capable of teaching others. Professional Practice This focus area revolves around the processes Thompson uses to evaluate instructional resources and the implementation of those tools to improve teaching, learning, and communication. We will follow a process that includes using curriculum and instructional strategies to drive technology-purchasing decisions. We will investigate technology solutions to address a variety of student needs. A checklist of critical questions will be used to evaluate technology purchases. Included in technology purchases is a provision for professional development and training. Also, our professional practice as a district involves using technology as a communication tool to reach parents and community members. One key discovery we made during evaluating our data is the need to revise our needs assessment for the future. We intentionally used the same survey to note growth and changes. However, because of the large discrepancy in district administrators and site administrators’ needs, we feel adjustments need to be made. The other adjustment noted was that we should also differentiate between elementary and secondary teachers. Evaluating technology resources and professional development opportunities are two areas we have targeted for needing improvement. We currently use Title IId. funds to assist in providing professional development. Knowing that the amount of money the state will be able to offer is being reduced, the use of how that money beening used to provide buildings with Tech Coaches is being evaluated. Our goal is to examine if other options are available to provide more in-depth training opportunities for more staff members.
