EMIS Seconded Trainers
Who are EMIS?
Egton Medical Information Systems Ltd (EMIS) is the UK's market leading primary care software provider with
more than 39 million patient records entrusted to its systems.
EMIS's current core market is represented by 52.2 per cent of GP practices that use a mixture of LV, PCS and
EMIS Web systems.
Our aim is to make good quality, timely patient information available any time, any place, anywhere through
interoperable systems. With 25 years’ software development experience, EMIS is known for delivering
systems and solutions that really work for our customers, coupled with market leading support and training.
History
EMIS began in the 1980s in a rural practice in Egton near Whitby in North Yorkshire. Dr Peter Sowerby and Dr
David Stables wrote the software with the founding principle that the systems used by GP surgeries should
improve patient care, and the idea of EMIS ‘written by doctors, for doctors’ was born.
To this day, from knowledge support to interoperability, clinical research projects and free online services for
patients, EMIS still puts patient care at the heart of every click of the mouse.
EMIS Training
It is a well known fact that 20 per cent of the success of an IT system is down to software, 80 per cent is down
to system knowledge.
EMIS is committed to providing quality training to enable our customers to get the most from their clinical
system. Our training programmes are designed to incorporate all aspects of the clinical system ensuring all
knowledge gaps are covered.
Our friendly and informal sessions are run by an expert training team that have undergone full system training
and accreditation and are enhanced CRB checked for added security. The training team are readily available
to offer training at a time and location suitable for the customer.
Service definition
EMIS can provide Seconded Trainers for one month or more to help PCOs to implement key strategic
programmes. Seconded Trainers are accredited in all aspects of the EMIS clinical systems (LV, PCS and
EMIS Web) and receive frequent updates on EMIS developments, helping the PCO provide a flexible training
solution without the restraints of permanent contracts. This enables the customer to focus on their core
business whilst providing the flexibility to meet local requirements.
EMIS Trainers are the experts in training end users on the EMIS clinical systems, LV, PCS and EMIS Web. As
well as a rigorous internal accreditation programme covering in-depth system knowledge and training skills,
trainers receive monthly update training and up to date information on EMIS software developments. They
work closely with the PCT, CCG and practices to meet local needs and develop a good understanding of local
issues.

Connecting for Health (CFH) and primary care organisation (PCO) Key Performance Indicators and the nGMS

A Seconded Trainer can provide any of the following services:
EMIS on-site training
Customised training at the practice is particularly popular. Training is delivered according to the requirements
of and at the convenience of the practice: for example, covering a few modules to various staff over the course
of a day, or working with individual staff members.
Set within the practice’s own environment, using their EMIS system and dummy data, training is aimed at
small groups of GPs, nurses, managerial or administrative staff. Training can either be modular, role based,
based around specific sections of the system, or focus on specific queries and knowledge gaps.

Classroom training
EMIS provides ‘hands on’ training courses held centrally, for small groups of delegates who want to cover
specific modules of the system, perhaps in line with local targets or seasonal demands.
By using a separate room where an EMIS system is set up, EMIS can train up to six delegates away from the
distractions of the practice.
Seminars
Catering for larger groups, seminars use a projector and handout material to give delegates knowledge of
specific system modules.
Online training
Using the latest web technology, EMIS trainers can run sessions for practice staff from their own office
locations. Delegates can see the application on their screens and even take control themselves. Sessions last
about 45 to 60 minutes.
Floor-walking
Following an installation, upgrade or practice move, a Seconded Trainer can be on hand to assist end users
with the help and support they need to implement new systems, business change processes and workflows.
Floor walking allows practice staff to be trained ‘on the job’, our seconded trainers can assist and train staff at
their workstations - providing immediate solutions and answers to everyday problems and tasks as they occur.
Training needs analysis
Training needs analysis is an effective way to identify any knowledge gaps, as well as the strengths already
possessed within an organisation. This process is invaluable for ensuring that budgets are spent on the right
type of training - helping customers to achieve their business objectives, personal development plans and
learning programmes.
