CRICKET UNIT STUDY GUIDE
Object of the Game:
Cricket combines the skill of baseball, challenge of football, and the thrill of hockey. In general,
the objective of the game is for the batters to protect their wickets, foul, run, and steal while
fielders stay in quick pursuit, roll, throw, or hold on to the ball, in an attempt to legally knock the
bail from the wicket.
Field:
2 wickets placed 15-30ft across from each other
Bases are across from each other approximately 30inches away from respective wickets
Batting:
Two batters from the same team take their places in front of the wicket with bats in hand
touching their respective base.
The batters job is to protect the wickets, not to necessarily to hit the ball. If the bat comes in
contact with the ball, NO MATTER WHAT DIRECTION THE BALL GOES (forward,
backward, left , or right) batter A must run to the opposite base while batter B runs to batter A’s
base.
The bat must be carried by the batters at all times and touch the base with the bat.
Same pair of batters stay at bat until an out is made.
There are FOUR OUTS before having to take the filed
A run is scored when:
One run is counted for each successful exchange
Batters successfully attempt a steal
A fielder interferes with the runners at any time even when fielding any interference result in an
automatic run.
Batters are out when:
A legally pitched ball knocks the bail from the wicket
A bail is legally knocked from the wicket, when the batter at the wicket or attempting to get to
that wicket does not have the bat touching that base.
A ball is caught before hitting the ground
A batter intentionally blocks the path of the pitched or thrown ball that would have resulted in an
out had it not been obstructed
A batter knock the bail from the wicket with his/her own body or bat
Fielding:
Fielder may be anywhere on the field
The fielder’s job is to try to knock the off the wicket
The best strategy is to give it to the pitcher who will try to knock the bail from the wicket.
Pitching:
Must not cross the imaginary line behind the wicket
Pitcher’s job is to knock the bail of wicket not to pitch to the batter
An alert pitcher will try to knock the bail from the wicket on their end of the field to put the
batter out anytime the batter at that end of the filed does not have the bat in contact with the base.
