The Little Match Girl / Michael A. Putlack
“The Little Match Girl” is a fairy tale. The story is about how the Little Match Girl goes to
heaven to meet her grandmother. The story made me feel sad because the Little Match
Girl died at the end.
The Little Match Girl is the main character. Her grandmother is a minor character. Love is
a very important theme in the story. The Little Match Girl’s dreams are important because
they are the things she wants in life. The Little Match Girl goes with her grandmother, but
she really dies at the end of the story.
2
The story takes place outside in the cold on New Year’s Eve. The Little Match Girl is
selling matches to people because her family is poor. When she lights the matches, she
sees a stove, a wonderful room, and a Christmas tree. She sees a shooting star, so she
thinks of her grandmother. The Little Match Girl’s grandmother picks her up and takes her
to heaven.
The end of the story was sad, but I’m also happy because the Little Match Girl went with
her grandmother. The story made me think about life and death. I thought “The Little
Match Girl” was a very touching story.

The Emperor’s New Clothes / Michael A. Putlack
“The Emperor’s New Clothes” is a fairy tale. Some thieves trick the emperor about magic
clothes, so the emperor walks outside with no clothes on. I liked the story and thought
that it was very funny.
The emperor is the main character. The thieves and the advisor are minor characters. The
child tells the truth. The child tells the truth because she isn’t worried if people think she’s
a fool. Tell the truth is a very important theme in the story.
Two thieves come to the city and say that they have some magic cloth. The emperor asks
the thieves to make the finest clothes with the magic cloth. They take the emperor’s
money and pretend to make fine clothes. Everyone tells the emperor that the clothes are
very beautiful. The emperor has a special ceremony, but a child yells that the emperor is
wearing no clothes.
I thought the end was very funny because the emperor looked very foolish. In the future, I
think the emperor will be more humble. In my opinion, the story was really entertaining.

The Red Shoes / Michael A. Putlack
“The Red Shoes” is a fairy tale that has an important moral. A girl named Karen gets some
red shoes, but when she wears them, she can’t stop dancing. I liked the story since it has
a happy ending.
Karen is the main character of “The Red Shoes.” The minor characters are the old woman,
the old soldier, and the angel. Selfishness is the most important theme in the story. Much
of the story takes place in church. Karen disobeys the old woman and doesn’t throw out
the red shoes, so you can guess that she will be punished.
Karen and her mother are very poor, so a shoemaker makes a pair of red shoes for Karen.
The old soldier says, “What pretty dancing shoes,” and then the red shoes won’t stop
dancing. Karen’s shoes start dancing at the ball, and she can’t stop for several days. An
angel comes to Karen and tells her to learn from her mistakes. Karen asks for forgiveness,
and then she has a feeling of peace and joy.
I was very glad that Karen finally became a good person. She is a naughty girl, but she
changes at the end. In my opinion, “The Red Shoes” was a good story that taught a good
lesson.

The Adventure of the Speckled Band / Michael A. Putlack
“The Adventure of the Speckled Band” is a detective story. The story is about how
Sherlock Holmes saves Helen Stoner from being killed by her stepfather. I believe that it
was a very interesting story.
Sherlock Holmes is the main character. The minor characters are Dr. Watson, Helen
Stoner, and Dr. Roylott. Greed and death are the most important themes in the story. The
speckled band was a poisonous snake from India. Helen Stoner often talks about animals
from India, so Holmes realizes that an animal killed Helen’s sister.
The story begins when Helen Stoner goes to Holmes’ place. Her sister got engaged but
died before her wedding, and now Helen is engaged and thinks she will die, too. Right
before her sister died, Julia Stoner told her about a mysterious speckled band. Holmes
and Watson go to Stoke Moran, and they wait in Helen’s room until late at night. A snake
comes into the room, but Holmes scares it, so it goes back and kills Dr. Roylott.
It was sad that Dr. Roylott died, but he was also a bad man. Helen Stoner is very lucky
because she didn’t die. I thought the story was very exciting, and I would love to read it
again.

“The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle is a mystery. Sherlock Holmes finds the blue
carbuncle, and then he finds the man who stole it. I really enjoyed the story and thought
that it was fun to read.
Sherlock Holmes is the main character of the story. Dr. Watson is a minor character who
helps Holmes. James Ryder is the thief who stole the blue carbuncle. The blue carbuncle
was found in a goose, so a goose will be important later in the story. Honesty is a very
important theme in the story.
The story begins when Peterson shows Holmes the blue carbuncle that his wife found in a
goose. The blue carbuncle was in Mr. Henry Baker’s goose, but he didn’t know anything

about the stone. Holmes and Watson visit the Alpha Inn, and the owner tells them to visit

What Men Live by / Michael A. Putlack
“What Men Live by” is a story about God and his relationship with men. The story is about
how an angel comes to earth and then gets to return to Heaven. “What Men Live by” was
a well-written story, and I enjoyed it a lot.
Michael is the main character of the story. The story takes place in Russia. Simon finds
Michael behind a church, so you know religion will be important in the story. Love is the
most important theme in the story. Simon and Martha are very poor but loving people.
Simon finds Michael behind a church, so he takes Michael home with him. Michael learns
how to make shoes and works in Simon’s shop. Simon and Martha learn that Michael is an
angel, but God punished him and sent him to earth. Michael has to learn three truths
before he can go back to Heaven. After Michael learns the three truths, he gets his wings
and flies to Heaven.
I was surprised to learn that Michael was an angel. “What Men Live by” made me think
about love and kindness. Overall, I believe that this was a very thoughtful story.

The Black Cat / Michael A. Putlack
“The Black Cat” is a horror story. In the story, the man kills his cat and wife, but the
police catch him because of a second black cat. I thought the book was a little scary
because of the deaths.
The man is the main character of “The Black Cat.” Pluto, the man’s wife, and the second
cat are the minor characters. Most of the story takes place in the man’s house. The man
hangs Pluto, so you know that he will also be hanged at the end of the story. Death is a
very important theme in the story.
The man used to be nice, but he started drinking too much, so he became an alcoholic.
The man poked Pluto’s eye out, and then he hanged Pluto outside his house. One night
the man was at a bar, and then he found the second black cat. The man tried to kill the
second black cat with an ax, but he killed his wife instead. Because the cat started to
howl, the police found the woman’s dead body behind a wall.
I thought the end of the story was very scary because of the cat and the dead woman.
The man in the story was a very terrible person. I think that other people should read this
book because it was an interesting story.

The Purloined Letter / Michael A. Putlack
19
“The Purloined Letter” is a detective story by Edgar Allen Poe. The story tells how Minister
D- steals a letter and how the detective Dupin gets the letter back from him. I thought the
story was interesting because Dupin used logic to find the letter.
The detective Dupin is the main character. Minister D- and the Captain are minor
characters. Dupin and Minister D- are both very intelligent people. Dupin tells the Captain
that the problem is very simple, so you know finding the letter will be easy. Logic is a very
important theme in the story.
The Captain comes to Dupin and the storyteller and tells them about a letter that Minister
D- stole. The Captain searched Minister D-‘s home and had thieves rob Minister D- to
look for the letter. Dupin gave the Captain the missing letter. Dupin wore green eyeglasses
to Minister D-‘s house and looked around the house for the letter. There was a gunshot
outside, so Dupin could take the letter.
Dupin is one of my favorite people because he is very smart. I loved the end of the story
because Dupin outsmarted Minister D-. My impression of “The Purloined Letter” is that
it’s an a unique detective story.
