UTILITY WORKER
DEFINITION
Under supervision, to drive various sized trucks and forklifts. Pick up and deliver mail, supplies,
equipment, and furniture; to assist with inventories, maintenance and minor repairs; to perform custodial
services as needed; perform duties of district courier as needed.
TYPICAL DUTIES
Incumbents drive various sized trucks in making deliveries to colleges and district office; assist in filling
requisitions; load books, supplies, equipment and furniture for surplus sales and storage; pick up and
deliver mail according to a prescribed schedule; operate a forklift in loading and unloading material;
perform minor repairs and assist with warehouse maintenance; pick up and deliver maintenance materials
to job sites on campus; monitor gasoline and oil consumption and inventory; may be responsible for
general appearance of maintenance yard inside and outside of fenced area; may be assigned daily cleaning
of restrooms and responsibility for trash disposal and maintenance of general appearance of
shop/receiving room and common areas; perform related duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
EXPERIENCE
Six months of recent truck driving experience that includes accounting for supplies or equipment.
Capable of driving trucks up to 1-1/2 ton capacity.
EDUCATION
Completion of course necessary to obtain forklift operator certificate or qualify for certificate by taking
course within six months of hire.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Within six months of hire obtain a forklift operator certificate. After six months of hire, must maintain a
valid forklift operator certificate. Possess and maintain a valid California Driver’s License in compliance
with Los Rios Board Regulation R-8343; employment is contingent upon meeting the requirements of
Los Rios Board Regulation R-8343. This position may require operating a District or personal vehicle in
order to complete assigned work within the scope of the position duties. Any offer of employment is
contingent upon the successful completion of a medical evaluation.
KNOWLEDGE OF
Safe driving practices and traffic laws; local street names and geography; basic preventive maintenance
requirements of automotive equipment.
ABILITY TO (ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS)
Perform the basic functions of the position; drive and perform minor service to the delivery truck; lift
heavy objects without assistance; load, unload and transport heavy and awkward objects as needed over
distances not reachable by truck; sort and compare names and numbers accurately and rapidly; plan and

follow time-saving traffic routes; follow directions; work effectively with others; read and write at the
level required for successful job performance; make minor repairs to truck and equipment used in the
course of duties; operate loading equipment; perform custodial work as needed.
Physical And Environmental Factors: Perform the basic functions of the position; perform heavy labor
including working seven hours or more each shift; operate equipment and tools used in custodial
operations according to predetermined standards; continuous bending, lifting heavy objects with and
without assistance (objects are sometimes elevated from floor level to above shoulders); lift and carry
objects weighing up to 50 pounds; frequent carrying of heavy objects short distances; bending at waist
and knees; reaching, grasping/handling buckets and other equipment and furniture; pushing equipment
and furniture across various types of surfaces; body manipulation; stooping/crouching; occasional
standing; climbing 8 to 16 foot ladders, twisting up to 45 degree angles; kneeling.
