Lab Week 2
Objective 1: Recognize and distinguish several different types of epithelial tissue.
With your atlas and/or text, familiarize yourself with the epithelial types (i.e., find and identify each
epithelial type on one or more of the slides listed below).
 Stratified squamous epithelium
o skin -- slides 26, 27, 28, 78.
o esophagus -- slides 35, 36, 37, 57.
o cornea -- slide 30.
o tongue -- slide 32.
o vagina -- slide 76.
 Simple columnar epithelium
o colon -- slides 47, 48, 49.
o intestine -- slides 42, 43, 44, 45, 46, 51.
o stomach -- slides 37, 39, 41.
o oviduct -- slide 74.
o uterus -- slide 75.
 Pseudostratifed columnar
o trachea -- slides 36, 57, 58.
o soft palate -- slide 33.
epithelium
 Transitional epithelium
o bladder -- slide 65.
o ureter -- slide 66.
o kidney (renal pelvis) -- slide 62.
 Cuboidal epithelium (simple and stratified)
o salivary gland (ducts) -- slide 34.
o tongue (salivary ducts) -- slide 32.
o skin (sweat glands) -- slides 26, 28.
o pancreas (ducts) -- 51, 52, 53.
o kidney (renal tubules) -- slide 62.
 Simple squamous epithelium
o blood vessels -- slide 10.
o lung alveoli -- slide 59
o kidney (Bowman's capsule) -- slide 62..
Objective 2: Find both listed types of epithelial tissue on each of the following slides
 Slide 29 -- Eyelid. Which type of epithelium lies
against the eyeball?
o Keratinized stratified squamous epithelium
o Non-keratinized stratified squamous epithelium
 Slide 50 -- Recto-anal junction. Which type of
epithelium belongs to the anal canal? Which belongs to
the rectum?
o Non-keratinized stratified squamous epithelium
o Simple columnar epithelium
 Slide 33 -- Soft Palate. Which type of epithelium
is on the roof of the mouth? Which faces the nasal
cavity?
o Non-keratinized stratified squamous epithelium
o Pseudostratified columnar epithelium
 Slide 37 -- Esophago-gastric junction. Which
type of epithelium belongs to the esophagus? Which
belongs to the stomach?
o Non-keratinized stratified squamous epithelium
o Simple columnar epithelium
Objective 3: Learn to recognize and distinguish glandular epithelial tissue.
Find examples of glandular tissue. Where possible, distinguish secretory cells from ducts (not all
glands have differentiated ducts). Use your atlas to identify the glandular tissue in one or more of the
examples/slides listed for each of these exocrine glands.
Sweat glands -- slides 26, 28.
Salivary glands -- slides 32, 33, 34.
Duodenum -- slides 42, 43, 44, 51.
Pancreas -- slides 51, 52, 53.
Gastric glands -- slides 39, 40, 41.
Uterus -- slide 75.
Mammary gland -- slides 78, 79.
Prostate -- slide 71.
Epithelial Practice Quizzes
To test/confirm your recognition of epithelial
tissue, you are encouraged to take one or more
ungraded quizzes.
Please indicate when you are ready for a quiz.
Your instructor will then provide a slide (see
boxes at right) on which you should locate each
of the listed structures.
Each of the listed structures should be readily
apparent in an appropriate region. Use the
eyepiece pointer at low power to indicate layers
or regions, higher power for cells and other
small details.
Do not call for a quiz until you feel confident of
your ability to recognize the listed structures.

□
You may also ask your instructor about any
other structure that catches your interest.
Epithelial tissues of tongue:
____stratified squamous epithelium
____simple cuboidal epithelium (duct)
____glandular epithelium
Epithelial tissues of salivary
gland:
____stratified squamous epithelium
____simple cuboidal epithelium (duct)
____glandular epithelium
Epithelial tissues of esophagus:
____stratified squamous epithelium
____simple cuboidal epithelium (duct)
____glandular epithelium
____simple squamous epithelium
(endothelium of blood vessel)
Note: As always, you are also encouraged to
seek confirmation at any time for your
recognition of structures on slides from your
reference slide set -- particularly of any features
not included in these quizzes.

Epithelial tissues of stomach and
duodenum:
____simple columnar epithelium
____glandular epithelium
____simple squamous epithelium
(endothelium of blood vessel)
