Name
Levinger & Clark (1961).
Freud repression hypothesis.
Aim
To investigate Freud’s
repression hypothesis
Method
Experiment.
Participants
Mixed
Procedure
Participants were given words such as quarrel, angry (negative)
compared with window, cow (neutral) words.
They were then asked to recall the words immediately in any order
After their tests they were given cue words again asked to recall their
association.
Results.
The participants took longer to respond to emotional words (These
words also produced higher GSR).
Conclusions.
The result suggested that Freud’s repression hypothesis was correct,
emotionally charged situations or words may make recall difficult.
