Standard Operating Procedure – Setting the

Crown O Matic

1. Purpose

The common thread throughout the SOP and HWD Policies and Procedures in general is the identification of responsibilities. This manual is intended to clearly and concisely identify the steps required by employees to complete any given operation in a manner that is consistent with Horizontal Well Drillers standards. It will document progressive steps required in sequence that are to be followed, an authorizing company department or position, and an author that is to be consulted if there are questions in any portion of the

SOP standards.

2. Scope

All Rig Personnel should have knowledge of what is to be completed with the setting of the Crown O Matic.

3. Prerequisites

Personnel are required to wear proper personal protective equipment, follow job safety rules, and have the appropriate experience and certifications to carry out their job functions satisfactorily.

4. Responsibilities

Driller and Tool Pusher are responsible for satisfactory implementation of this procedure.

5. Procedure

1) Hold a JSA safety meeting reviewing procedures for setting the C-O-M

2) Read procedure on setting c-o-m

3) Driller/toolpusher must communicate with derrick hand as spotter

4) Spotter are to give distances from crown and directions to driller

5) C-o-m needs to be set with 1 joint of range to 3 drill pipe made up to top drive. Distance of drill pipe in relation to distance needed to make connection

6) Do not set c-o-m any higher than needed to make connections or to trip pipe

7) Use lockout/tagout procedure on draw works prior to setting c-o-m

8) After sliding the c-o-m drill line actuator into position, thoroughly tighten

9/16” bolts

9) Insure c-o-m toggle is the right distance above drill line wraps. Do not set toggle to high. It needs to be right above bottom wrap.

10) Place a paint stick indexing mark on drum guard where c-o-m is currently set

11) Insure toggle is tight to jam nut.

12) Test with spotters in place. Have someone watching toggle and ensure

someone is watching wraps for the correct distance.
