MOVING AND YOUR FAMILY
Relocation is an event filled with a variety of emotions. Each family member may
experience different emotions at different times.
Suggestions for a successful relocation







Don’t forget to take care of yourself. If you take care of your physical and
emotional needs, you will be better prepared to help your family.
Recognize that your family may experience a sense of loss as a result of a move.
It takes time to work through this loss.
Maintain contact with friends and relatives.
Express and share your feelings, emotions and expectations with your spouse.
Schedule time alone as a couple.
Write or call ahead to the MFRC at your new posting location for information
about your new community.
After the move become involved in familiar activities.
Effects of Moving on Children
Three
1.

3.
most important factors are:
Positive attitude of parents
Communication between parents and children
Active involvement of children in preparations for move
Children of different ages tend to react differently to moving. Below are some possible
reactions to be aware of:






Two year-olds may be relatively unfazed because the concept of
changing homes is too difficult for them to grasp. However, they are
likely to pick up on increased levels of tension in the family.
Preschoolers have a better grasp of the implications of relocating and
may be fearful that their possessions will be lost or left behind.
Under five may go through regression, reverting to baby talk or
becoming clingy. Children who are toilet trained may start to have
accidents. If children display this behaviour, give them lots of
reassurance. Reassure yourself that this is just a way of coping and it
will pass when your child feels more settled.
Five to seven year olds’ concerns usually focus on places and friends
they are leaving. Children this age worry that they will lose contact with
playmates. They may regress a little and need a little more reassurance.
Eight to eleven year olds may feel lost, lonely and sad. It is important
to help them connect with other children and activities in their new
neighbourhood.
Eleven to thirteen year olds may feel sad and lethargic. This sadness
may be displayed in angry acting out behaviour. These are typical
reactions to loss. Parents should be concerned if their teens become
particularly introverted and constantly keep to themselves. Some teens
may refuse to move and arrange to stay with friends.

Suggestions for helping children through the relocation process














Encourage children to express their emotions. By expressing your own feelings
in healthy ways, children will recognize that they are not alone in their feelings.
Encourage children to create a scrapbook of their former school, home and
friends. For example, have a picture taken of the family in each room of the old
house and have the child describe what they liked about that room. Then at the
new home take pictures again of the family in each room and have the child
describe what they like or do not like about that room. Put the before and after
pictures in a scrapbook for the child to keep.
Involve the children in some of the decision-making and be prepared to honour
their decisions.
If possible, include children in house hunting trips. Let them visit their new
home and neighbourhood prior to the move.
Read stories about moving to younger children and provide books to the older
ones.
If possible, visit the school your children will attend prior to the move.
Talk about the move and your feelings. Let your children know that it is OK to
be sad.
Don’t forget to mention the new adventure ahead and possible
advantages of the move.
Help your children to say good bye in creative ways to the home and friends they
are leaving. Plan an informal get together with friends. Let your children visit
their friends before you go to say goodbye and encourage them to trade pictures
and addresses.
Allow your children to carry with them a special item during the move. Let your
child participate in the move by helping to pack his or her overnight bag with
favourite pyjamas, books, toiletries, etc.
When arranging your new home, organize the children’s rooms first. Place
household items in familiar places as much as possible.
Let your children be involved in planning and decorating their new room. While
having familiar items is reassuring, choosing new colours or items for their
rooms will offer something to look forward to.
Resume normal family routines as soon as possible (bedtime, chores, traditions).
Children benefit from a sense of security, structure and predictability.
Help your children plant a small garden at your new house. Let the children
choose their favourite quick growing plants and flowers. If you are moving late
in the summer, plant bulbs in the fall to come up in the spring. This will help
your children feel a sense of permanence in their new home.
Above all, children need to know that their family is going to work together
during the transition to a new home. Communication, support and love are the
three “must haves” for families who relocate.
Children are individuals so their reactions to change are dependent on their
temperament, personality, experiences, previous moves and parental attitudes to
moving.
For the children who have never moved, reactions are often much stronger and different
than children who have moved several times. On the other hand, children who have
moved several times are usually into their teen years and other pressures are of
concern to them, which may also bring up strong and different reactions.

Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP)
New residents to Ontario have 90 days to obtain an Ontario Health Insurance Plan number. After
this time the reciprocal coverage agreement with other Canadian provinces ends. Individuals
arriving from postings outside of Canada who have not been covered by a provincial health care plan
should contact the Barrie office as soon as possible to request a waiver of the 90 day waiting period.
To register for a health card you must go in person to the Ministry of Health Office. When applying
for a new health card, you must bring three original documents to prove citizenship/immigration
status, residency in Ontario and identity. For a detailed list of approved documents, please consult
the website listed above.
If your children are 15 years or younger, you need to apply for their health coverage. For your
convenience, you can apply for their health coverage at the same time you apply for your own. The
children do not have to go with you because they will not have a photo or signature on their card.
