Congratulations to Bill Formanack - for earning the “Knight of the Year” award. This honor goes to a
man who exemplifies through his life and service of the council the attributes of Charity, Unity, Fraternity
and Patriotism. The man we selected to be the Knight of the Year has shown all of these attributes.
Fraternity, through his work with the annual fish fries. A charitable heart exemplified through his work at
all Knights events. Patriotism, for his work with the first degree team. Unity, through his efforts with the
training of the altar boys, or just going up to the altar and serving himself, which he has done many times.
Next Saturday is our annual Gala Event - We still have many raffle tickets checked out that have not yet
been turned in so please get those turned in as soon as possible. If you did not place them in the collection
basket today, please put them in the raffle box in the Sacristy in an envelope with your name on it. We still have many books left to sell so
we ask that everyone please make one last effort to pick up a book today and get them sold. We would like all tickets and money handed
in by next Friday, Feb. 12th. We have sold enough tickets to cover our expenses so every ticket we sell at this point is pure profit!!!

Upcoming Parish Directory – An agreement has been signed with “Lifetouch” to begin the process of putting together a new parish
directory that includes both St. Paulinus and Holy Trinity parishes. I will need help with the organization of the project from both
parishes. An organizational meeting with the Lifetouch representative is up in the air right now because of the weather we recently had. I
humbly ask for at least five people to give me a hand with this very necessary project. – Fr.
Lent beings on Ash Wednesday – February 10th – Mass times: St. Paulinus – 7:00am & 7:00pm / Holy Trinity – 5:45pm.
Throughout the Season of Lent – there will be an additional Mass scheduled each week on Thursday at 5:45pm at St. Paulinus.
Throughout the Season of Lent – we will have the liturgy of the Stations of the Cross at St. Paulinus at 5:45pm each Friday.
The Rules for Lent - The rules for fasting and abstinence in the Catholic Church are set forth in the Code of Canon Law (for the
Roman Catholic Church) and in the Code of Canons of Oriental Churches (for the Eastern Catholic Churches). In the United States,
the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has declared that "the age of fasting is from the completion of the eighteenth year to the
beginning of the sixtieth." The USCCB also allows the substitution of some other form of penance for abstinence on all of the
Fridays of the year, except for those Fridays in Lent. Thus, the rules for fasting and abstinence in the United States are:



Every person 14 years of age or older must abstain from meat (and items made with meat)
on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and all the Fridays of Lent.
Every person between 18 and 60 years old must fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.
Fasting during Lent means eating one regular meal and two smaller meals that do not add
up to one regular meal.
It is good to remember - the requirement of the 1-hour fast before receiving Holy Communion
both inside and outside of Mass, which also includes gum & flavored water.
On Ash Wednesday – the collection will be taken up to aid the Church in Central and Eastern Europe.
As we approach the season of Lent - which begins with Ash Wednesday on February 10th this year, it is good to intentionally take some
quiet time and think about why we are to participate in such a season, what we are to do during this time of penance and what we hope to
accomplish with such actions of self-denial and charity. We know that the Church provides us with the liturgical seasons for a reason,
such as in Lent we are encouraged to refocus on the continual self-purification that will help make us that person whom we were intended
to be. Just as a parent may occasionally need to remind their child to do their chores, we are reminded by the Church to continually do
what it takes to purify our souls, and such a reminder takes place during Lent. Additionally, the dispositions we gain during Lent are
intended to have lasting effects throughout the rest of the year.
Liturgical Changes for Lent – A somewhat common tradition during the season of Lent is that there will not be a Final Hymn sung at
any of the Masses throughout the entire season, in addition to the Offertory Hymn. We will all depart in silence at the end of Mass. The
purpose for this action is to unite ourselves with Jesus for 40 days while praying, and then enter Holy Week where we walk with Jesus
during His Passion and death. Then at the Easter Vigil we will sing that glorious “Alleluia” and “Jesus Christ is Risen Today!”
LDCCW Ash Wednesday Day of Recollection – on February 10th at the Retreat House near Waverly. The presenter is Father Gary
Coulter and the topic is Pope Francis and the Year of Mercy. Registration is between 9:00 -9:30am. Drinks will provided in dining room
and a sack lunch is on own, which will be between 11:00 - 12:45pm. The cost for the day is $10.
World Marriage Day - takes place on February 14th. World Marriage Day is an observance sponsored by the
Catholic Worldwide Marriage Encounter movement and observed on the second Sunday of February each year. Its
purpose is declared to be: "World Marriage Day honors husband and wife as the foundation of the family, the basic
unit of society. It salutes the beauty of their faithfulness, sacrifice and joy in daily married life.”
Lenten Fish Fry – The Knights of Columbus Friday Fish Fry is on February 19th, February 26th & March 11th from 5:00-8:00pm. The
15 minute Stations of the Cross each Friday will be at 5:45pm so there will be plenty of time to enjoy your fish before or after the liturgy.
Altar Society Fundraiser - The Altar Society will hold a bake sale at each of the Knights of Columbus Fish Fries. Please bring your
donations by 4:00pm on Friday, the day of the Fish Fry, and leave it on the tables in the Commons Area.
Hope Lutheran Church – Burr, NE / Creamed Chicken Dinner & desserts, salads & sandwiches / Sunday, Feb. 14th / 11:30am - 1:00pm

of Scouts everywhere. A "Scout is Reverent" is one of the components of the Scout law and in the Scout promise, youth pledge to do their
"Duty to God". Syracuse Cub Scout Pack 337 and Boy Scout Troop 337 thank you for your support.
