Course Number: PHED 1306
Course Title: Safety and First Aid
Course Description: Learn to recognize, evaluate and prioritize the first aid needs of
individuals in emergency situations. Lectures, demonstrations and practical
experience provide qualified students with American Red Cross certification.

Student Learning Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, students
should be able to do the following:
1. Use first aid for choking and other respiratory emergencies.
2. Recognize when someone needs CPR.
3. Use CPR to someone whose heart has stopped.
4. Use the emergency medical system (EMS).
5. Demonstrate how to reduce the risk of dying from a heart attack.
6. Recognize the signals of a heart attack and give first aid to reduce the chance that
the victim's heart will stop.
7. Demonstrate how to reduce the risk of injury to children and infants.
8. Demonstrate ability to keep an injured person safe from further injury and as
comfortable as possible until medical care can arrive.
9. Demonstrate sport and fitness-related skills and apply the use of the skills in
lifetime activity in the promotion of health and wellness.
10. Demonstrate knowledge of nutrition and its implications for sport performance,
physical fitness, and wellness.
11. Communicate and critically define the importance of the relationship between
lifetime activities and the quality of life
12. Demonstrate the biomechanics of fundamental movements and skills.
13. Develop the kinesthetic sense in the process of acquiring movement skills.

Automatic failure of the class
2 make-ups will be permitted at a designated time or a designated assignment.
Tardiness - Arriving 10 minutes or more after the start of the class will result in a
1-point deduction from the final attendance grade each time it occurs. Attendance,
Punctuality, and Participation
This course is designed to allow for active participation by each student. Because of the
nature of the class, punctual arrival to class is necessary. Attendance is taken at the beginning of
each class period. If you arrive to class one to 10 minutes late, you will be marked tardy. Three (3)
tardies result in one absence. A total of 30 points may be earned for attendance and participation
during the course of the semester.
Conduct and Participation
During the course of each class period, each student will participate in skills practice,
discussions (when appropriate), and a general contribution to the class. Our class time will
be used wisely so that no minutes are wasted and all students have several chances to
practice all skills. Attendance at SIMS lab presentation is mandatory.

Successful completion of all in-class and take-home labs during the course of the semester
is required to earn full credit. All labs must be completed to earn the full point value (no
partial credit given).this includes required emergencies phone number list.

Quizzes
Max Value 30 points
15 Point Value
Quizzes will be given at any point in the semester to demonstrate
knowledge of skills and reading assignments. Be prepared for daily chapter quizzes.

Midterm CPR test
15 Point Value
Students must pass the American Red Cross requirements to earn CPR adult, child, infant
and AED certifications.
This includes completion of all standardized CPR skills tests and written exams for Adult,
Child, Infant and AED.
5.
Safety Project and Presentation
15 point value
Successful completion and presentation of the Safety project, Emergency notebook or flash
drive and first aid kit due the end of the semester. Guidelines will be provided.
6.
Final Exam/Certification test
15 point value
A comprehensive written final exam will be given at the end of the semester.
Certification will depend on successful completion of requirements necessary to earn the
American Red Cross Responding to Emergencies First Aid and CPR/AED Adult and Child
with CPR –Infant certificate.
This includes passing of all skills test and written exams covering the Adult, Child, and
Infant CPR components, and Safety and First Aid.

A = 92 - 100 points
B = 84 - 91 points
C = 76 - 83 points
D = 68 - 75 points
F = 67 points or below
*A student can receive credit for the class without receiving the American Red Cross Certificate.
