E-LEARNING FOR AFRICAN PEACEKEEPERS (ELAP)
Training in Pease Support Operations from UNITAR POCI
United Nations peacekeepers and humanitarian workers bring peace and relief to regions torn by strife and conflict. At the close of 2005, there were 85 000 United
Nations personnel representing 108 nations, serving on United Nations peacekeeping missions. The United Nations Institute for Training and Research Programme of
Correspondence Instruction (UNITAR POCI) provides students of all nations with self-paced distance training to prepare them to serve on peacekeeping missions.
E-Learning for African Peacekeepers (ELAP) provides all UNITAR POCI courses in English and French free of charge for all African peacekeepers, police and
gendarmerie personnel.
What is ELAP?
Since 1995, DPKO/ITS and UNITAR POCI have cooperated to develop 18 self-paced distance training courses. The program currently has over 20 000 enrolments
annually, with students from more than 130 nations.
E-Learning for African Peacekeepers, which began in 2006, is a joint programme between UNITAR POCI and DPKO/ITS. Its purpose is to strengthen the training capacity
of African military and police officers through individual enrolments, with the support of national headquarters and peacekeeping training centres in Africa, as well as the
participation of United Nations missions in Africa and elsewhere. All Africans can enroll free of charge for all courses of the programme, in French or English.
ELAP is made possible through the generosity and financial support of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and the people of Canada and Norway.
Who may Enroll?
All current or potential African peacekeepers, military, police or gendarmerie personnel of African nationality may enroll in the ELAP programme, regardless of rank,
nationality or army.
