Faculty Workshops
Hazel McCallion Academic Learning Centre
University of Toronto Mississauga
2012 – 2013
The Robert Gillespie Academic Skills Centre and the University of Toronto Mississauga
Library are providing Faculty Workshops upon request for the 2012 - 2013 academic year.
The Robert Gillespie Academic Skills Centre is pleased to offer two related one-on-one
sessions for instructors who are preparing their academic courses (workshops also are offered if
there is sufficient interest).
Preparing Your Course Syllabus
This session will assist faculty members in creating a syllabus that is aligned with university
policies and legislation by describing and providing examples of the essential elements that
must be included. Departmental templates (where available) will be provided to faculty to
guide syllabus development and review.
Aligning your Courses with Undergraduate Degree Level Expectations
This session will assist faculty members in planning and preparing course materials for
delivery through Blackboard to ensure that they are in alignment with Undergraduate Degree
Level Expectations. Examples of course materials and activities from current courses on
Blackboard will be provided.

Portal. Bring your course materials and laptop. Sample new and improved tools to support
student learning and experience better Portal functionality, as applied to your course
materials. Share in an informal discussion of proven and practical guidelines and get new
ideas to help streamline your preparations for the upcoming semester.
Instructional Technology in Focus – Customized departmental training sessions that focus
on advanced topics identified by your instructors. Possible topics (minimum 1 – 2 hours each)
include: Grade Center, Communication and Collaboration Tools, Tests and Surveys,
Assignments, and Blackboard Course Design.
Using Blackboard to enhance students' learning - Use statistics, tests and surveys to
inform instruction, to enhance student learning and motivation, and to better understand the
impact of technology on student learning.
