MODERN LANGUAGES
S1 / S2 FRENCH, GERMAN AND URDU.
Given the nature of Modern Languages, most homework issued in the Modern Languages
class will be LEARNING, as this is the only way to become proficient in communication in any
language. As a result, there will always be homework, in the form of learning new vocabulary,
grammar or even essays, for every period of French, German or Urdu.
The homework will always be recorded in the homework diary and parents can check this at
any time. It is difficult to make real progress without this regular learning of new words which
arise in the course of each lesson. The pupils need to get into this learning habit.
As well as the regular learning of vocabulary, pupils will have homework in the form of:
Learning of pieces of writing (Folio pieces) – or learning material for Speaking
assessments. These both contribute in S3 / 4 to the final award at Standard Grade.
Reading exercises. Pupils will need a dictionary at home to be able to do these.
Writing small paragraphs to consolidate work done in class.
Writing sentences in modern languages based on a Listening exercise done in class.
Translation exercises into French / English / German / Urdu.
Ongoing homework – past papers, essays at Higher level.
We would welcome comments from parents in the Homework Diary about the content /
timescale of the homework issued.
