Spanish government.
Friar – members of the clergy (preachers) that taught Christianity to the Indians.
Presidio – Forts built around missions, which offered safety from un-friendly Indians.
catechism – a set of questions and answers about Catholic beliefs.
epidemic – the rapid spread of diseases in a short time
cede – to give up formal ownership of something
Tejano ( teh-HAH-noh) – a person of Hispanic descent born and living in Texas
class – social rank based on a person’s wealth or place of birth
peninsulares – Highest class in their society ( conservatives )
criollos – second class or middle class
mestizos – a mixed race between Spanish and Native Americans
filibuster - a person who wages an unofficial war on a country
republic- a society where citizens elect representatives to make laws
conservatives – people that want to limit new changes and keep their old ways
