Evelyn:
My name is Evelyne Mkwele, I’m a lady of 47 years. I’m blessed with
four children and I used birth control to plan all of my children. Istarted
using birth control, right after the birth of my first child in 1984. In that
year I used the pill. This helped me, giving me time before getting
pregnant again. I used the injection method for birth control after I’d
given birth to my last child in 1999.
Family planning has helped me be successful in what I do. Because I
had time to rest I had strength to work.. So along with everything
else, I kept farming. I also kept busy with bee keeping. Bee keeping
helps me pay for my children’s education. I’ve done my best to make
sure all my children have gone to school. I believe that by educating
one child, you can educate a whole community.
In 2010 I was convinced to stand for election as village chief. I was
elected by a huge majority and since 2010 I’ve been chief of
Mpindimbi Village.
I hope to be an example to other women. My hope is for the women
from my village to get more family planning information, and reach the
goals they have set for themselves in life. If this knowledge is not
given to them they will remain in poverty. This will affect them and the
children they give birth to without family planning. If they receive this
information they can plan their own lives. They can help the
community by passing on the information they receive.
